A friend who's been in club racing forever wants to bring his street car to an autox to help prepare for the Porsche Parade autox. He knows it is not a competitive autox car but just wants to get some autox experience.

It is a 1984 930 turbo that has just about everything imaginable done to it, both suspension-wise and engine-wise. I don't know the specifics other than it puts out something north of 500whp, is a slant nose, monster wheels/tires, track setup suspension, etc.

I've looked through the rulebook, and the best I can come up with is B-prepared. Does that sound reasonable to anyone? I assume it won't really matter, but since he has to enter a class since we don't have TO classes here, I figured that one would do?

BP would likely work as would SSM I'd imagine unless he has gutted the interior. I look forward to seeing such a beast at an event.

Thanks for your reply Les. I hope he brings it out too, but this Sunday isn't looking too good at the moment apparently.

It look from the description like the car that came to the PCA AX/ school earlier this year.
This think is a monster. XP will be a better fit I think if its this car.

More like dark greyhish maybe light browhish metallic.
Ask him if he was at the April PCA AX.
He should have come to the one we had in May, it was the fastest we had ever done.
I was in 3rd gear and well into it in some part for 3/4 of the course.

Patrice,

Yeah, that's correct. It's been a few years since I've seen the car. Here's a pic of it:

I'm trying. He's running a PCA club race at VIR on Friday and Saturday but plans to pass on the endurance race on Sunday. He has a 914 with a 3.6L that is pretty amazing on track. Hopefully I can get him there on Sunday along with another track friend with an E92 M3 who's not autocrossed before but has been doing HPDE for ages.

Well no show on the 930 along with another track friend with the E92 M3...'tis amazing how hard it is to convince long time club racers to consider an autox. :)

On another classing question, what's the outlook for the 2012 Civic SI sedan? Is it a correct assumption that it will be superior to the 2011 (i.e. given the hp and significant torque bump, etc).

GRM had a page long story about the new SI. They said it had even shorter gearing, which meant less speed per gear, but the gear ratios (other than 1st) on the new SI are longer than the 06-11. What GRM might be thinking is that since the redline is 7000 rpms instead of 8300 like the 06-11 that even with the slightly longer gear, it might run out of gear sooner. So the power is about the same (197 vs 201....though some people think the k20z3 probably has 200 just like the RSX-S k20z1 but didn't want the Acura buyers to feel jipped that they didn't get a torsen AND have the same power as the $4k cheaper car :)). But the torque on the 2.4L is 31 higher than the 2.0L 06-11.

The new one (in Sedan trim) is 29 lbs lighter which is nice.

My main qualm with the new car, and maybe I should just get over it, is that the 06-11 has 13.5:1 steering ratio and this tiny steering wheel and 7+ degrees of caster. So the steering feel is amazing. When I first got the car on an autox course, I was turning the wheel way too much because I was used to the big rig truck steering wheel and 15:1 steering ratio in the WRX. The new SI has 16.08:1 which is a lot slower.

And as I said, the gearing may be a tiny bit longer, but the rev limiter is 1000 lower so you actually get a bit less out of every gear. I'm not sure if you guys heard Matt and I coming through the finish, but I think I hit the limiter 12 times from the exit of the slalom to the finish line :).

Regardless, I don't see it being much better a G stock car than the outgoing generation unless it can fit 275/40/17s on it due to revised suspension geometry, but I don't think that is the case.
