I had a great time too and I agree about Z-Max, it's a little different from some of the sites we're used to. When I went in June it was 90+ degrees and I had a huge problem finding grip with decent tire life left (it was the first time I ever felt the Si push/understeer), mostly because I was overdriving a bit because I thought that's what it took to be quick. Wow. Quite the opposite is true. The grip is a little less, average speeds are a touch higher, and the elevation changes are interesting a la NCAC '05 & '06 in Greensboro. Running at Z-max is really awesome from a visibility standpoint too which makes things really fun to watch. The site sort of reminds me of a ten times larger version of Greenville, which I always enjoyed.

Highlands knocked it out of the park and we were finished at a decent hour both days. Plus, there weren't many cone calls which I think helped keep things running smoothly. What a great time!?!

I agree about NCCAR's future potential for the NCAC. Imagine Z-max with great grip. Simon mentioned it will only have a 1 degree drainage slope carrying down from the existing area after the hill is taken out and if there are no lightpoles (can't imagine they would be needed), course designs could be very interesting and the accessibility to 95 is a plus. I just looked up the distance from Charlotte to Garysburg and it's about 4-1/4 hours, not quite as far as I thought it would be.

Way to go Tarheelers!

If I remember correctly Triad had it by a long shot. But 2nd (CCR) and 3rd (us) were much closer.

My 63.599 from Day 1:
https://picasaweb.google.com/1081874774 ... 9954669282

I went to third..not sure if that was worth it. What do you guys think?

I got sloppy in the slaloms, as usual. My steering inputs seem a bit choppy...

I'm relatively new, so I'm really appreciate any of your comments/critiques!

Hard to tell how you were driving the course from that camera angle.

Steering input is somewhat relative to what the car is doing and how you like driving it. I have never thought I have smooth steering inputs but I have had people tell me my car looks smooth/slow while I'm on course. :whoknows: Don't worry about being smooth unless it's really keeping you from meeting your goals/having fun.

Here are my fastest runs from the weekend: https://picasaweb.google.com/xak944/201 ... ampionship

I'm pretty sure I had too much air in my tires on Saturday, causing the lack of grip on the site to be even more pronounced. On Sunday I ran 29/28psi F/R, which seemed to help. That surface was weird, and the style of course was definitely different from what us THSCC'ers are used to. :? Okay, enough excuses.

To be honest, after Saturday I was pretty frustrated with the lack of grip (surface + over inflated tires) and a style of course different from what I was used to. All in all though, I accepted the fact I wasn't driving well and used that energy to be more focused and want to attend more nationals-style events (and all events at ZMAX I can find). I walked away from the event with a good attitude and happy with my improvement on Sunday. So, many lessons learned and good times were had.

Congrats to all the THSCC trophiers, especially Matt, Jennifer, Steven, Jeremy and Marcus!

Well, I'd like to forget the driving I did this weekend as that was atrocious. I've got several excuses lined up for that, but basically I was just way off my game. Congrats to Wally as he drove expertly and whipped my ass. It was a fun weekend regardless and I'm happy to say, though there were some technical issues with the car, it made it through all its runs and the new engine performed flawlessly. And let me tell you, she is a beast for sure now. As I mentioned to Bernie several times over the past few days, the banana beast now has MORE horsepower than his red monster C5. :D That was a pleasant surprise.

Highlands did a good job putting on the event and things went pretty smoothly. The courses were really unlike anything I've driven before, quite fun and let me play with the loud pedal a good bit, a little too much perhaps as it got me into a lot of trouble. The ZMax site is huge, though the grip level was a bit disappointing, I still want to run more events there as the size of the place allows for some very different course designs. Hopefully, I will soon get the remaining issues worked out with the new beast and get accustomed to all that power and stop the ass beatings.

Congrats to all the NCAC winners, of which I sadly am not this year. Thanks to all the came out as we had a decent turn out this year, though the club cup results were still disappointing. Hopefully we can all drive better next year and present a better challenge in the club cup.

When I started autocrossing in the San Francisco area in the 70's this style of course was the California "norm". Small sites would do multiple laps. Corvette clubs had a big influence on the minimum course widths, etc. so the courses were always open. SF Region of SCCA had a LOT of influence on the National rules to help make sure that Nationals courses stayed relatively open also. We called this style of course design "miniature road race". Lines were used even on small sites so that course following was not difficult. For some clubs the lines were the official course boundaries and cones were to help us find the lines, apexes, etc. Cones were 1 second for the non SCCA clubs and 2 seconds per National rules for SCCA.

The "problem" with this type of course is that nothing else is ever as much fun for many of us.

Honestly, I prefer a course with a little more transition compared to the pure sweeping action of these mini road courses.
