Take a look behind the liner of your KBC. I believe they have been Snell certified for quite some time. That might be why it seems better built than your Fulmer.
I don't understand you refusal to wear an open face for
autocross. You are going no faster than you would on the highway and I'm sure you don't wear a helmet during your commute to work. Right? I switched from a full face M helmet to an open SA and am extremely happy. Sitting in line waiting for your run and sweating in your brain bucket is extremely uncomfortable. At least with the open face you can catch any breeze that might be blowing that day, or you can direct the air conditioning towards your face and cool off.

Todd,
I checked on the KBC thing. my old KBC has no reference to SNELL that I can find. again, if that helmet had not been wrecked in and the padding having become so warn that the helmet is too loose, I would still trust that helmet. My girl friends kbc vr2 does have a snell stamp on it (i didnt pull the lining to see if it was m2000 but I know it was not designed until sometime after 2005, so I should be atleast m2000). its tight, but it will deffiently get the job done and look "cool" while doing it... eh, who am I kidding, I HATE the graphics on that thing... but at 90 bucks for a close out helmet, how can one go wrong
as far as the open face vs close face. It all really depends on the situation. I go up to the mnts without helmet in the car and will push it some. am I running 100%+ percent on an autoX corse... no. is there still a chance of me wrecking, yes. same thing with the highway... but I feel the likely hood of me spinning is less then on an autoX (which I have proven by the number of times I have spun doing autoX vs the times on the street, 2 times, both in the rain, and both driving the speed limit and not playing around).
Simply put, I do not feel comfortable pushing the car, or anything else to the edge (and beyond) my abbility in anything less then a full face. I am sure some of this is influanced by my time on a motorcyle, but, I simply am not. I feel too naked wearing a helmet without a chin bar.
If you want to talk pure comfort, I do agree with you about a 3/4 being alot more comfortable in a car sitting and waiting your turn. Now, if the rules allowed a 1/2 helmet, would you be comfortable wearing that doing autoX? I believe those helmets allow you to be even more comfortbale in the summer heat then a 3/4... though you are giving up even more protection with them.
