SPLIT thread begin (split from VMP autox thread)

I think the "hatin'" is a disproportionate representation, but that may be only me...certainly some constructive criticism, though.

Sounds like the worthwhile take-aways are:
--email contact with current and prior drivers (members or not) is a good idea
--perhaps THSCC should have more of a web 2.0 presence (there's a post on there from 1/15 asking about 2011 schedule...with no response.
I was joking.....hence the apostrophes.

Anyway, there is a thread from 1/22 at 3:25 pm about the 2011 schedule and then there is a new thread from 1/22 at 3:55 pm that answers it :).

And yes, I think the communication bit from that thread (email communication with news/updates/events) plus utilizing social networking is probably the biggest take-away along with looking for new/closer site(s).

James,

Not sure if the FB post was from a member or not, and I *guess* you can friedn THSCC on FB without being a member... If he's not a member he doesn't have forum access--that's the only reason why I raised the issue of posting the next upcoming event on FB.

Ahh I see what you are saying. I thought you were referring to Todd's forum post. I just saw the FB post.

I've sent Jeb a message about giving Rodney et al admin privileges to that group. I think in these ages that FB can be a good way of getting word out for events etc and no I don't think we should require that you be a member to join that group.

That's fine and I'm not going to try to force you or others. But you are the exception and not that rule nowadays if you get what I mean :).

FB would only be one of a few means of hopefully improved communication for the sake of better turn out.

I definitely know I'm the exception to the rule, but I see my wife on it about 2 hours every night and realize that it'll never be something I'm interested in. - AB

Good point about the social networking. Jeb was kind enough to put together a Facebook for our club and I've added a few photos but unfortunately it hasn't gained too much steam. Perhaps it's a privacy issue?

I'll chat with Jeb to maybe gain access to submit more event invites, as I'm sure that wouldn't hurt, plus it may encourage current members that haven't come out in while to dust off the car and come out to race.

I think it could be a great way to increase novice participation (it's getting easier to reach other car clubs that may have members wanting to try something new, just have to be selective of course) and create a stir in a good way. Plus, having a few event photos with plates blurred out would give folks an idea of what to expect and any in-car videos would be a nice touch.

EDIT: Just saw your posts James. Thx!

I've messaged Jeb to try to get us admin privileges in that group so we can get the Spam off the 'Wall" and be able to post events.

FB can be as little or as much as you want to make it. For example, even if the club *did* want to make FB *the* official way to notify people of event information, all you'd have to do is create an account with a fictional name (so you don't have to worry about all us other "friends" of yours finding you and sending you friend requests) and then you "Like" the club page and setup notifications via email for updates to it. Bam, you don't even have to log in to your FB account and you'll get the updates right to your inbox.

Or you could join with your real name, and do like I do (or go bigger) and just don't accept friend requests from people just because you *know* them. My apologies to the few of you I "know" via TH but aren't really friends with, but that's why I didn't accept your request. I don't want to know what you're doing all day, and don't really care for you to know what I'm doing all day. :)

I've got a few family members that joined and hardly ever post or do much with it, but they can at least log in and see pictures and such easily when we've got the kids on vacation and the like. It's useful for a lot of things without you needing to get "sucked in" or whatever.

I actually find that family get-togethers (you know, those ones that you CAN'T get out of) are much more enjoyable thanks to FB. Why? Because it makes it easy to scan beforehand and find a few things you can actually talk to people about that might be more interesting than the usual idle chit-chat that goes on. And heck, you can "hide" those people the rest of the year (and they don't even know it) and not care what they're doing then. ;)

Just my FB rant against those who say "I just don't want to spend hours on something like that."

It's only as much of a privacy concern as you let it be. Manage it for spam, make the privacy settings appropriate, and only post pre- and post- event announcements (not results...and maybe not pics, as some drivers may not want their photos on the FB page) and that should be enough for a private club looking to add members.

Oh, and don't use the FB page to play Mafia Wars.

Yes I agree.

If we are going to use FB for communication. We will not post anyone's car other than our own or a club member's who has given explicit permission (lic plate blurs for sure). And no results at all.

Triad successfully uses FB for these purposes. We can always chat with Chris to see how these manage the privacy concerns.

EDIT: If you look at Triads pictures, none of them show license plates....not sure if that is intentional or not.

Cline is on Facebook, if that tells you anything.

"not that there is anything wrong with that"

i heard recently that if you set your smart phone up with Facebook it dumps tons of data into your phone. of course i don't really understand this whiz bang technical crap anyway. so i doubt i will be a Face-paster any time soon.

my thought is "yay (sarcasm, now I have yet another thing I need to check on before heading to another autoX"

I dont think having multiple points for posting information is that good of an idea. it decentralizes the info and makes it harder to know what all is going on at/with the event. at least you are not talking about having 20 different places this info is being posted though.

i'm sure others can add to this but i see plenty of online businesses that have a facebook page. i assume the benefit to this is the added exposure thru networking. if THSCC had a 'page", would it do anything more than collect friends and pass along info?

how would the casual surfer stumble across it? does this idea put our "brand" out there for people to find us and add members?
