I’ve been out of the loop a while, but looking to get back in. What’s the current thinking on autocross helmets? I think it was brought up in the January meeting, but I’m not sure I came away with a clear understanding. I looked at the posted autocross rules, but someone said they were out of date. Here's the deal: I’ve got my Simpson SA95 that I started using back in ’96 (but haven’t used since ’03). Am I good for autocross or do I need to start shopping?
Thanks!

No, that helmets Snell certification has expired in 2005. You need to update to one of the following:

Snell M2005
Snell M2010
Snell SA2005
Snell SA2010

If you intend to do HPDE/TT opt for the latter two. For JUST autox, the former 2 will be cheaper.
Check out Apex performance :).

Cash! Wassup man! Long time, no woop your @ss in ESP. :P What ever happened to your SHO? Ryan sold the Talon and has regreted it about 100 times.

Glad to see you're back in the loop man.

Sorry but that is wrong per the SCCA 2010 Solo Rulebook
Quote:
All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell
Foundation standards (SA2005, SA2000, SA95, M2010, M2005,
M2000, M95, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A,
41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are acceptable.

Of course they contradict themselves in the listing of any of the 95 helmets but the way I read the wording

SA or M2010
SA or M2005
SA or M2000

are all legal in 2011 for AUTOCROSS. I think the 95's were legal last year because all the 2010 helmets came out REALLY, REALLY late in 2010

Hope to see you at an even soon Cash!

Yes I see what you are saying in terms of the contradiction. Didn't know SCCA allowed expired certs, but what I said was a SA or M95 helmet doesn't have snell certs anymore (or SA2010 or M2010 for that matter, but as that quote mentions, it allows the current 2010 and the two prior, 2000 and 2005).

Yup, exactly as above - this was announced at a meeting late last year, but probably hasn't been updated on the web.

Hey all you new Executive types - make sure to add this one onto the list of rules updates for this year. :)

Thanks, James and Ryan for the clarification. I was thinking that was the deal. I have an Arai M2005 I can use for a while. When I’m ready to do an HPDE I’ll get a SA2010.

Hey, Vince! The SHO is long gone so I won’t be getting wooped in ESP. I replaced it with another green Ford so I can get wooped in F-Stock. Looking forward to getting out there again with you, Ryan, Art and all the rest of the gang! Eagerly awaiting the autocross schedule.

That was LAST year, bitches. A newborn will do that to a guy.

I plan to run a full season this year, plus I bought a season pass.

Ryan, enjoy the early years when they stay where you put them. I autocrossed until they got to elementary school, then had to put it aside for 8 yrs. Now that they are in high school, they have their own weekend plans. I’m sad I’m no longer the center of their universe, but happy to be playing with cars again!
