I PM'd back and forth with Jinx a couple of more times to get some information around the school fees, number of students and other logistics. He does think that timing it around late March to early April would be perfect. Once I have a better picture of how it all works, I'll shoot a presentation over to Rodney and the autocross VP's to look over and see if this is something we want to do.

I have no doubt in my mind that I can get the school filled to the maximum student count, which is a plus. - AB

Just FYI when thinking of scheduling of this, right now we have 3/20 scheduled for an autocross event and 4/16-17 planned for a novice school/autocross. I don't suppose the novice school and the extreme school conflict student-wise however.

I was leaning towards the first weekend in April. I would think it would marry up well with our schedule and hopefully be warmer, but certainly not too warm.

According to Jinx, they need a minimum of 8 people and maximum of 10 for the Extreme school. I agree, there shouldn't be conflict with the novice school, but it's a good consideration. I wish we had a bigger site where we could run a concurrent competition school and extreme, for that would be a bigger hit.

Once I nail down the financial details, I'll shoot the officers a short proposal. I hope to have that information in a day or two. - AB

First weekend in April is VIR-N. :( I'd say I'm only ~25% likely to sign up for this though.

We put a brand new set of Hoosier R6s for Karl & Chris to take the class last August. We counted about 150 runs for both drivers on Karl's S2000, which included instructor runs. The fronts were showing a tad of cord at the end, the rears still had life in them. We put R6s on the car, instead of A6s, to deal with the August heat, 2 drivers, and the large number of back-to-back runs. In the Extreme School all student runs are 2 laps around the course. This coupled with many runs in a session equates to a lot of heat.

The R6s never overheated and they got an amazing number of runs out of them. A6s with a single driver might be OK. Streets tires will definitely be the cheapest and most convenient way to go since each driver will get about 70 runs over the 2 days (that includes the instructor runs).

We thought about running some Kumhos or Toyos, but since the school was so close to Nationals it was worth the extra money for them to dial into the Hoosiers. It obviously worked for Chris since she did well at Lincoln.

I'd like to take the class myself, we'll see how things are going at the time.

^ What he said. BTW, that's 150 runs total for Chris and I, not individually for a total of 300.

I'd do it again, finances permitting. Although my performance at Nationals didn't reflect it, it helped me a LOT. I took away not only reinforcement of some things I knew I was doing wrong and need to correct, but new information on other things to correct. Jinx noticed me doing a lot of aggressive throttle modulation in slaloms, for example, and I didn't even know I was doing it. I think he said, "you probably look like a hero when you get that right, but the other 99 times probably don't work." :)

There's no way A6s would have survived in that heat between the two of us. R6s were perfect. It took maybe the first "lap" of a run to get them up to temp, if that. From that point on, they were at temperature for the rest of the session, easily.

Here's a piece of advice for those of you who care about your front bumpers and rocker panels (and I know not all of you do). Tape them up with painter's tape. With the amount of runs you're doing, while learning new tricks, you are going to hit a LOT of cones. I suggest the bright green version, available at auto parts stores in the body repair area. It's thicker and sticks better than the blue household stuff.

Anyway, as to the school, I'll have to see what finances look like once we get closer. If it were next week, I couldn't do it.

I'm interested, but would probably prefer the Comp School, but mostly only for financial reasons. As Karl said, even if it doesn't translate as I wish it would in competition, I get a lot out of either of the SoloPro schools.

IIRC, tire wise, it was suggested to me that for the best advantage, if possible, train on the type of tire you'll be competing on. I used V710s @ the Extreme School last August. They were slightly used before we began, and 3 were completely corded-wasted when we finished. The 4th had about 1 local event left and was trash.

Yeah - I'm already in for VIR-N, so if it conflicts, no solo pro for me :(

I am very interested in attending an autocross school this year, however I also want to volunteer for the THSCC Novice school (girlfriend will be driving as a student!), so I'd prefer that they not be on the same date.

I also don't know if I'd be "eligible" for the Extreme school. Are there prerequisites?

And what are the differences between SoloPro compared to Comp School that Gwen mentioned and/or any other autox schools?

The Extreme & Comp School is another school version that SoloPro offers. You can read about the differences at their site linked in my first post.

SoloPro doesn't use a prerequisite system for their courses if I recall correctly. This would be about 2 weeks prior to the Novice school, so there should be no conflict.

If we had enough interest for Comp School, we could do both on different dates. - AB

Sorry if I'm being obtuse, but it's still not clear to me what the differences are after reading the website. Extreme lists dataloggers, while Comp says they are available. Comp is 1 day, and Extreme can be 1 or 2. Extreme also talks about multi-lap courses, is this different from Comp?

Are the courses meant to be taken in order, or do they cover different topics? And finally, I saw mentioned the approx. cost of Extreme, what does the Comp usually run?

Thanks for the info!

Zach,

If they let me do the Extreme School then the qualifications are: (1) not a total noob and (2) a check that clears. From what I can tell it's not a requirement to do Comp before Extreme, but they use knowledge from Comp School to build on during the Extreme School. Comp is ~mid-$200s and Extreme is in the low $500s. The differences were more about exposure/seat time and one-on-one instructing time--much more with Extreme than Comp, mostly because it's two days. It's very helpful to have a short list of problems/challenges you currently have to work on, so they can provide you focused advice. Comp School is good for "Hey, here's how I drive--what do you (the instructor) think I need to work on?" Extreme is more like "Hey I've been having problems getting late on 4-cone or longer slaloms, and just can't get it right...what am I doing wrong?" If you don't come with a set of issues to work on, you might not get full benefit from it. That's the way I did it, and feel it was a very good value.

Knowing how well you drive already I suspect you'd do just fine in Extreme School after getting used to some terminology (which you may already know anyway)

Just my $0.02...

I'm thinking of picking up a set of used road-race rubber to have on hand for schools.

Thoughts on used Hoosier SM tires or Toyo RA1s? I've heard R888's aren't worth bothering with.

Not sure I need an extra set of 13's - maybe I could buy the tires "on the rim" for the school? I'll get in touch when the details of the school get nailed down.

Okay, sounds like I would probably benefit most from the Comp school. Count me in if one is held this year.

Thanks, Steven and Aaron for the information/advice/experience shared.
