I have actually been on the phone with Flyin' Miata within the past few months talking about a turbo kit, however I've decided against that for now and adding displacement to the vette instead since the engine has to come out anyway. I've been consumed by the cult of V8. Though my Miata may see boost again at some point, it would mostly just be for street fun.

Why not just take the V8 out of that heavy car and put it in something lighter, for example a '96 miata

Not the right engine for a miata. While it'll work, I suspect he'd prefer to have a block with a little more aluminum and a lot less iron.

I've certainly thought about creating a monster Miata. However as Jason states above, the LT1 from my vette would definitely not be the right engine for a Miata. Though I've never driven one, I have my reservations about just how effectively drivable an LS1 Miata would be with all that torque. It would be cool for sure, but it would be quite a handful. I thought most about the 302 Miata, but there are some compromises in that swap I'm not really crazy about and any V8 swap is a really pricey proposition. I've driven a boosted 1.8 Miata and that package really works nicely. I really didn't like some of the low speed driveability issues my supercharger setup had to make the kind of power it made, hence I find myself at a turbocharger as that seems to have the fewest compromises and the :)/$ ratio is really good.

Would you mind going into some of the issues you had with the supercharger? That's what I'm currently leaning towards for my end game for this car.

You can make more, cheaper power with a turbo but it seems that people have a ton of reliability issues on tracked turbo Miatas. When you piss away 1/2 of a few HPDE weekends because X part broke or X stud backed out it closes the price gap in my mind. That and there are off the shelf mounting solutions for the Rotrex superchargers now. You're on your own for intake piping but I think I'd be there no matter what with my NB motor in a NA scenario.

I'd say alot of the problems folks have with a FI Miata + track are due to having crummy engine management, S/C or Turbo.

Idle issues and the transitions from off-on-off boost at part throttle primarily. I still believe the superchargers are ultimately the way to go for an autocross car as I believe linear power delivery is more important than peak horsepower. My driveability issues were mainly due to the piggy back engine management and additional fuel solutions. Unfortunately, you have an OBD II car as well so you may have the same problems. I believe a stand-alone engine management solution like a mega-squirt could have solved all my problems though there are some inherent issues with combining an air-to-air intercooler and a positive displacement supercharger and the added throttle volume associated. With something like the Rotex, that throttle volume issue doesn't apply. Do you plan to inter-cool and run some serious boost, or just keep it conservative?

I already gave up on being street legal with this car.

My goal is a car that can be reliably tracked at 200WHP, unless that approaches infinity dollars. There are turbo cars out there that can do 300+ reliably on track, but they all have spent more then I care to. Any current work I do I'm keeping the 200WHP number in mind so I don't have to do things twice.

I still have a ton more research to do, but the current top contender is one of the Rotrex blowers. The car already runs off Megasquirt so I'm good for an EMS. Still waiting for the box to control the VVT on the car that DIYautotune is putting out. Hopefully it'll be available in time to start the season next year with the VVT working and tuned.
