To cut down on the number of trees killed and having to keep up with which numbers/letters we don't have enough of what would happen if we bought a big sheet of magnetic (white) Cut it into blocks and used a dry erase marker to number cars without their own magnetics? They could be handed out in grid and then returned after their run and given to the next needy soul. This would cut down the confusion/crowd at registration and should work for all cars except those of the Aluminium or Plastic variety. We could use spray-paint for those. :P

Just a thought

OR....we could assign the Novices a number at the time of their registration on-line. The first to sign up is NOV #1, the next is #2 and so on. Say we have 20 newbies, we'll at least know how many numbers we need before hand. Any walk-ons get the next number down the list.

And if you aren't a Novice you should have magnetics! :stick: Maybe we should make some up and sell them at the THSCC stuff table?
:idea2:

It makes sense but,...............

That would make preregistration by novices kind of confusing, as well as be a royal headache for timing and scoring people. Since the NOV's can sign up for any number they want when they preregister. And that info is what T&S use for the event.

Yes, but I'll betcha Carl/Emmie could change the registration page on-line to make 'em get sequential numbers. Carl/Emmie?

Me'thinks Mr. Keene & Rob have a good idea. If Carl & Emmie could rig it, it would have a number of advantages. The current paper numbers/class sheets and blue tape is less than optimal.
I know some feel like the club shouldn't be responsible for things like numbers but the fact is you need a solution for Novices. Since I've been a member, this club has always been a supportive of helping new folks enter this sport.
IMHO - that's a *good* thing .....

Magnets don't stick to all cars...

Paper and tape does.

I understand the magnet limitations. Based on what I observed Sunday blue tape doesn't do such a great job either. If we have a raining morning it would rapidly approach impossible.

I thought about running my saturn at one time and realized my magnets wouldn't work!!! And decided I didn't want to have to worry about tires for two cars!!! Blue tape isn't optimal but don't know what else to suggest!!

We had several situations this weekend that made scoring a pain in the patootie. First we had a novice that had a 2 digit number and one of the digits fell off after his second run. He did not replace the number. Instead he would tell the starter what his number was. This is fine if the person doing raw sheets waited until the car started to write it down. We can't do that. We write the class and number down when you get in line. Therefore this novice was written down as NOV * instead of NOV **. The error was not found until after trophies. Fortunately it didn't change the novs that received trophies.

The other issue we had is class designations that are not readable. The start line was unusually far away from the bus this weekend, and it will likely be farther at some point this year with the wireless heads. No one using paper and tape writes there class letters big enough or BOLD enough. Some of us that work in the bus are getting older and our eyes aren't as good as they once were. I think it might be time for a set of binoculars for the bus.

Everyone just needs to remember that if your car isn't numbered and lettered like the web site describes, you run the risk of your times not being entered correctly. It is a real pain to have to manually enter times, then have to do an audit, the whole time there are people waiting for the trophies to be handed out.

Sorry I rambled so long. I tried telling my non-racing (yet) wife about these problems but it just went over her head.

Todd-

The wireless system would mean the bus could be right NEXT to the starting line at every event. However, T&S wn't be able to see the finish at all.

Oh yea, I guess it would work that way also. I just had this image of the bus being about a mile away from both the start and the finish. I guess that was just me over thinking again.

and blue tape although advertised "low tack" sometimes has harmful results if paint is old and weak

My first event I had a white window marker and marked really large my numbers and class that covered the whole rear side windows( at that event it rained too) and at Larin burg I had some Homeade magnets and kept blowing them off in the first 1/4 mile of the course(and I have a slow car)
I think at Danville I'll have both really large magnets and my white window marker to help you guys in the bus. we love you guys, and we mean it.

These discussions about what can make T&S easier are a good thing. I'm bummed I missed the event (Lburg is my favorite site!).

The best change we started trying last year, which we really need to continue to do, is the "grid audit". The worker coordinator gives the grid worker a list of cars by class and the grid worker verifies that the car is marked properly for the driver before he/she is released to the start line. (Best way is to look up the car number on the sheet, find the person's name, and have a conversation: "Bob?" "Yes?" "Go ahead!") If anything is wrong, it needs to be fixed before they can go to the start line, no exceptions.

Did this happen at Lburg? If not, it should become policy :)

We have a "No Shoepolish" rule now because a lot of people have bad handwriting and/or tiny windows. It does works fine in some cases.

I still think the paper number idea seems to fix the most problems with the least hassles for the club. It is enough of a pain in the arse for people to do that they want to get magnetics ASAP. Anoyone who loses paint because of the tape - sorry, no sympathy here. I will loan you the $10 for you to go get or make your own.

I can make magnetics class and numbers at home in an hour for $10 easy. Ask me how.
