It looks like Jim won the DS title at the Pro Solo final -- congrats Jim! Here are some pictures I found on-line:

Am I a ProSolo scoring n00b? It looks like Jim's in 7th place... :whoknows:

In any case, it's very cool that THSCC members are doing so well at the national level! Great job!

Thanks Ryan. If I'm honest, had it been a local event, and I was by myself, I probably would have gone home and skipped the second day. I thought about calling to see if I could get my plane ticket moved back a day. In the end, I'm glad I didn't do any of those things, because the day two course was, without question, the most awesome autocross course I've ever driven on.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I really felt like this would be my breakthrough year. I'd been driving well locally, and even had some good drives at the NEDiv up in DC in May. So, I thought maybe I could do it again at Nationals. Nope. I had my head up, alright, but it was up my arse, rather than looking down the course.

Here's the weird thing about Nationals, though - it was still a blast. The whole trip is like going to summer camp (in a good way). It's kind of an adventure, and there are always great stories well after I get home. At the moment, I'm planning on doing it again next year, and if I finish poorly again, oh well.

I'm anxious to write some things, but for the most part will wait until I'm not on a Blackberry riding home on the interstate.
What Karl said about this entire experience is true. You really can't imagine the caliber of drivers there. And the courses are unlike any I had seen, even @ Tours. Being there just changes how one even looks @ autocross.
And, actually, Karl drove well. Again, it's just hard to describe how awesome so many of the drivers are who attend!

That's the main reason that I want to go next year Gwen. Just seeing all the different car classes and all the camaraderie that surrounds it is reason enough to make the trek, even if I got destroyed by the Neons and Geneses.

A 20 hour drive by myself is kind of a tough pill to swallow but I'd guess splitting it up into two days would a lot more bearable, even if it does mean an extra night of lodging.

Would competing in Nationals be doable in six days if one were to split the drive into two days? I guess I mean: drive two days, race two days, then two days back? I'm guessing you have to get there a day early though.

I'm laying the groundwork with my wife considering she'd be watching our little guy for a week by herself.

Yes, I think so. More detail when I'm on a computer, but we were lucky to have extra time.We did T&T on Sun.All day Mon was just for walking courses, then we ran Tues/Wed. But you can walk early in the mornings, between run grs 2 & 3 and after all heats are finished for the day.T&T goes on all week. You just have to reserve a time slot. Even the drive out isn't bad if you don't do it all @ once like some guys (and you know who you are.) Plan to go if you can. You won't be sorry. My only regret is having waited so long to go.

For what it may be worth, if the grip is pretty good and consistent at Lincoln and there are no really slow corners the THSCC runway sites with mostly slaloms and lane changes and questionable grip due to dirt/grass/gravel/etc. make it really hard to learn how hard the car can corner on relatively fast and long corners and faster high grip twisty areas. At least that is what I decided years ago when I was active and competitive Nationally.

Nationals courses tend to be more like "minature road race" tracks with some slaloms included. I LOVE that type of course because that is what I started on in California.

Regarding a "rush" trip to Nationals, it might be fun if you are good at high pressure and LEARN courses really quickly. However since I'm neither I found that arriving days early, doing either the practice or the Pro, and getting tech done ASAP and then walking the courses a LOT was important to even having a chance.

I'm looking forward to returning after I retire in a couple of years or so. Too bad there isn't an Old Farts class at Nats. Of course some of the Mod classes seem to be dominated by Old Farts.

That's the way I always had to look at it. I never finished in the top half of the field at Nationals myself, even though I finished second at the Pro Finale and have trophied at other National events. Never felt like it was a pressure thing, either...just never happened for me. *shrug*
