I'm trying to decide whether I should take the Phase 2 EVO school or do the Driver's Challenge one. They have spots left for the Drivers Challenge April 3rd in DC and also Phase 2 spots in hotlanta on April 16th.

For those of you who have taken either of both, which one would be more beneficial with my level of experience?

Sad as it may seem, you will not be able to take either without taking Phase 1, if I recall correctly. EVO requires you to take Phase 1 before any other class. - AB

Yeah what Aaron said. They're really sticky on Phase I no matter what your background is. They push that you take Phase II before the Challenge but it sounds like there maybe room to negotiate on that part. Send an email to Jean Kinser-Dana and see if you can talk her out of it and jumping right into Phase II.

Evo = Evolution = Autocross Driving School

Believe me, you are not the first to think it is related to the Mitsubishi "Evo" car. ;)

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

If you have taken Phase 1 or can skip it, I will leave that up to you. As for Phase 2 versuses Challenge. It is pretty much a toss up... a lot of help there.

Both are higher speed courses than Phase 1. Phase 2 really stresses the looking ahead. The Challenge assumes you are looking ahead and have mastered the Phase 1 and 2 lessons. The Challenge school is more about aggression and applying the Phase 1 and 2 techniques against the clock.

Both the Challenge and the Phase 2 run a course that is similar to what you experience at the national level. The Challenge course has a lot faster offsets. You also learn to brake really early, even before exiting the offsets :) The phase 2 is cool because they keep changing the course with fewer course walks. Until finally, they change it and you don't get to walk it. But if you aren't driving first, you can cheat and watch.

There is no timer on Phase 2. You know when you drive the course well, because any error is really magnified. The Challenge school, the timer is running on each run. And the times are noted....

I think I am the only one in EVO history who has taken just the Phase 3 and nothing else :) They let people not have the requirement for phase 1 for one year, the last year THSCC did the evo school, and I jumped on because I was at weedding on the first day of the school and could not take the phase 1 or 2 schools. :)

Thanks for the advice. From your experience Jim, I'm going to try taking the Phase 2 and then take the Challenge later. Apparently there is no Challenge school in DC like I thought, so pretty much I'm limited to the Phase 2 anyways.

I don't know that I have "mastered" the Phase 1 lessons, but I myself don't feel I would get much out of a Phase 1. I'm pretty sure I have the basic autox techniques down and am pretty smooth. Looking ahead IS something that I need to work on, and w/o a timer it will give me opportunity to work on "feel" which is something I feel  that I lack.

I have toyed with taking Phase 2 this year. Stepping back from it, I thought is might be the best school. Although having Salerno as my instructor in the Challenge was awesome.

But I think new house, tires and travel is going to prevent EVO this year.

We were going to do the Challenge school again @DC but we just got word they were sending our check back because they weren't going to have enough instructors. I would like to take the challenge school on a full sized site and better surface than the Richmond mall lot we were at the last time. You think Sanford is gritty...
I'd like to take the dial in school, but not the day before a national event like they've scheduled.

I have Phase I in VA next weekend. I'm thinking of Phase II in Nashville on May 22. Any good/bad feeback on that site or the hosting club?

I'd consider going down to Atl on Apr 16th Tom if I can get the time off.

Yes phase2 is all about looking ahead, yet I learned more about looking ahead in the challenge school than in any other school. In the challenge school, after you've run the course a few times they tape off the lower 1/2 of your windshield. You have no choice but to look way ahead, and WAY ahead takes on a whole new meaning, at least for me it did. It proved that you really could negotiate a slallom when all you could see was the last cone before you got to the first!
Phase 3 for those not familiar concentrates on course analysis, and driving the quickest line. They set up a large course featuring a big sweeper and a multicone slallom. by adding cones in the sweeper they force you to take a wide line and a tight line to see what effect each has on your times. They also show you what happens on the slallom if optional and you pick one direction or the other. They run the course in both directions and show what affect altering line thru one feature to set up for the next feature has on your time depending on if the next feature is an acelleration or decelleration zone. All really good stuff!
