Steve, thanks for the reminder. Lemme tell you something - even when the sun's down, it's hot lately. I put new rear brake pads on the S2000 earlier tonight. It's not 97 degrees out there right now, of course, but man, the humidity is a killer.

Anyway, I'd like to make a further suggestion to people. If you haven't done so already, get some clothing that's made out of that quick-drying, synthetic material. I believe Under Armor was among the first makers to market this stuff, but now, it's all over the place. A bunch of mine is from Reebok, some from Columbia, and some are Target's house brand. Try some of this stuff on a hot day, and I bet you'll never go back to wearing a t-shirt again.

+1.

The thin 50+ UPF shirts I touted before are something I'll shamelessly plug alongside the quick-drying UA activewear. I saw them on sale 50% off at Dick's in Brier Creek the other day but they were all XL, XXL size.

remember, when you stop sweating and are still hot and active outside your body's ability to dissipate heat goes down dramatically given the loss of evaporative cooling. Body temp goes up, risk of heat stroke sets in.

As Karl mentioned, the Target brand (Champion C9) is very good for the price. I've got a lot of the C9 stuff, and for the shirts, they are pretty much the equal of the Rebok shirt that I got from Sam's Club (Sam's probably still has some).

I heard on the weather this morning that it's going to be so humid for the next few days that sweat will have problems evaporating.

Please remember, however much you're doing to stay hydrated, DO MORE! What your're doing may not be enough. Err on the side of caution.

I highly recommend some sort of salt supplement. A good one that's available locally at many places is Nuun. It'll allow your body to absorb and use that water better on these extreme days.

Also note that people have talked about trying to notice if you stop sweating as your first sign to take extreme action to avoid heat exhaustion. That's hard to do when the humidity is like this for many because you'll soak your shirt (even dri-fit type stuff) in sweat and then not realize you're not actually sweating any more. It is so humid that even high end technical gear WILL NOT DRY right now. Trust me, I've been soaked several times this week.

So keep that in mind as you're evaluating your personal condition. Consider taking a few extra shirts to change into throughout the day, even. You'll be more comfortable (at least for a while).

Donnie, seems like you may be confusing terms.

Heat exhaustion (profuse sweating, weakness, clammy pale skin, nausea, headaches cramps) can be viewed as a precursor to heat stroke (dry flushed skin, pinpoint pupils, headache, dizziness, tachycardia, dyspnea/tachypnea and elevated body temp) which if not promptly addressed could possibly lead to altered mental status, seizures and in some cases, potentially fatal.

Your advice is well-taken, though. Just needed to make sure folks did not get confused because treatment and risk is different...

Heat exhaustion = slow down, get shade, cool off with ice packs, hydrate
Heat stroke = call EMS while doing the above

quick classing Q.
this is my first autoX, so technically Im at Novice. do i still need to be in a class?

my car is Integra type Rizzle. so its D stock. but i have R comps (thats my only "mod"). I honestly dont care about classing since i just want to go out there and have fun and not really worry about competing.

which class would i be in?

You're still DS. R-comps are allowed in stock. So you'll run NOV with a DS index for proper scoring.

ok, since there is a lot of buzz about the heat and heat related issues, we're going to be a little more proactive at this event. Our own Steve Carter, who is a certified doc, has graciously accepted the role of first responder for this event. Steve is planning on setting up his canopy near the bus and plans to stay at the canopy unless he's on course. Steve will also have a radio, so if there are issues on course, call for help. There will be a cooler w/ cold water and towels for folks that need help or just need to cool down.

If you feel strange in anyway or see anyone that is starting to struggle, please get them over to the canopy and let Steve assess and assist.

Bottom line here is hydrate and keep aware of how you feel. The advice on the shirts is also a great point, I've bought some myself and they help wick off the sweat and help cool you down.

Just be smart this weekend folks, just be smart....

What's up Kourosh? Good to know the ole R is going to be out there!

I'll be driving my black Si Sedan; just catch up with me if you have any questions and I can ride along with you if you want. All you need on your car is it to read "NOV 23" or whatever number you run with of course. You can get numbers at the event or for better karma, print your own at home and bring 'em.
