I plan on running as a NOV in the ESP class on Sunday. I originally signed up for NOV 9 AS when I registered but changed classes afterwards. Since ESP 9 is already taken I know that I have to choose another number. Are numbers 'locked in' or do I have to buy different number magnets throughout the year if I someone registers before me with the same number that I would have taken?

Would the numbering convention be, for example, ESP 09 or ESP 9? How do I account for being a NOV?...do I just register as that or do I place those letters on the car as well? (Or, will it just be implied by my driving? :)

Thanks, CHris

numbers are "locked in" when you register a permanent number - via the thscc website.

you should find the numbering & lettering rules on the website as well.

Kevin,

I did reference the website first. I found:

The SCCA® rules basically say:
ALL cars must have class letters and numbers on both sides of the car;
numbers must be a minimum 8 inches high and use a 1.25 inch wide stroke;
class letters may be smaller, usually 4 inches high;
letters and numbers shall be of a contrasting color to the car color;
(hint: red letters/numbers don't contrast with a black car)
numbers and letters may be of magnetic material, tape, or a large white paper label with thick black marker on it, as long as the above rules apply. Note that SHOE POLISH ON YOUR WINDOWS WILL NO LONGER BE ALLOWED.

It doesn't state the number format: x or xx.

If you are in NOV class, that is the class you run on the car... "NOV" The ESP or AS or whatever just tells the system what your PAX is for result/trophy purposes.

As far as your number goes, as Kevin said, you can register for a permanent number via the website. Then it is yours for the year.

----In General-------------

Something for everyone to remember when ordering magnetics (since it's the beginning of the year)... Make them contrasting... for example, white DOES NOT contrast on silver, black DOES NOT contrast on red (though the other way works OK), fancy fade jobs can be a pain. Get a nice plain block letters/number font the fancier it gets, the harder it is to read at speed. Make the numbers as large as will fit on your door confortably, or at LEAST the SCCA minimum 8". Make your class letters somewhat proportionally shorter.

My personal preference is for a "number block" where I have 1 magnetic square (the color of my car) that has my number on it and another with the letters on it... this gives more magnetic contact with the car vs cut out letters/numbers, and reduces the number of magnetics I might lose.

If it's a cold morning and the magnetics don't seem to want to form to your car, put them on the engine block after you arrive and warm them up... then stick them to the car. All edges should go down then, and you won't have them fly off where the wind would have caught them before.

If anyone wants to know why this is important, ask to Todd if you can observe in the bus and see how busy it is in there. Then see what a mess it can make if they can't read the numbers, or the course workers can't read the numbers. Big big fun lemme tell ya. :)

Number format... you can put "09" on the car, but the computer (at least used to) only take "9"... and even if it takes both now, think of the confusion haveing 2 cars with the same number would create.

Ok, I thought the "displaying class letter" rules would be on there. If you're running Open classes, you put your class - ex. ESP - on there. If you're running NOV, TIR or PRO, that's all you need to display. You can also put the class designation on so others in your paxed class can know what class your car is, but it's not necessary.

And re-read and remember the other stuff in Diane's post.

If you also put your PAX class on there, make sure it's BLATENTLY obvious that the NOV/TIR/PRO is the "real" class. If there is ambiguity, it will cause problems in the bus as to whom the time belongs. It's much simpler just to avoid the issue by not displaying PAX classes. If your compeditors want to know what PAX you declared, they can look on the results sheets posted during the day.

My recommendation would be to go to http://www.mcmaster.com and look up item number 5761K11
(Flexible Magnetic Sheeting Color Vinyl On 1 Face, 1/32" Thick, 24-3/8" Wide $ 5.05 per Ft. )

This is the same thickness as the numbers on nocones.com , and you can be as creative with scissors and fonts as you want to be. Don't do something stupid (like I did) and bother cutting a NOV magnet, I only used it for four runs before garnering wood booting me to open class.

Wes,

Thanks for the pointer. I'll most likely use tape until I get out of NOV...thanks for the info

There are paper #s and class letters available at registration for anyone who doen't have their own. There is usually some lowtack (blue) tape there as well to tape them on with.
