I only have 3 things to add:

1. In the event that something really bad ever happens, I want our sites to hear about it directly from a club officer, and not on the news.

2. Any minor leak about a mishap could turn into a media circus. I don't mind discussing on this private forum, but I would prefer that pictures and video stay away.

3. Someone mentioned the corvette video. God, every time I see that I am glad that it's not my club. I bet the club and that site has been substatially hurt by the widespread distribution of the video.

Stories are OK, pictures aren't. They can be msconstrued.

If anyone ever wants to know about any incident, email the officers. We will be happy to have honest, open, personal discussions.

I made my inquiry that evidently started this discussion because of another sport we're involved in, scuba diving.
For many years it was taboo for any scuba publication to ever mention any dive related incidents, the head in the sand, you might scare off the newbees syndrome. It was very difficult for anyone to collect any statistics and rumors were rife.
A couple years ago DAN (Diver's Alert Network) started publishing it's own publication, and the powers that be said this is ludicrous, accidents happen, and some lead to loss of life. If we openly discuss these in our magazine, we can see if there is a common link or a change of procedure that can be implimented to prevent future accidents. I read the reports in each issue and what the findings and recommendations were to try and make us safer divers. IMHO,
The facts should be presented as best known, without any personal identifiers to tip off an insurance company so that anyone can be aware of what actually happened and what might be done in the future. I think that the incident with the dumpster for example if made public might have prevented the second and third incident and possibly even the one with the oil tank. More than the club officers need to know, since they are not always the person setting out the cones.
The dicotomy exists that we are told that we as competitors, are the ones ultimately responsible for our own safety, and if you don't think an event is safe, to not run, yet the "order" goes out that the competitors are not supposed to be told about incidents, so how can we recognize a safety issue? The heat stroke incident at Laurinburg is a case in point.
Just in this thread I see how rumors and misinformation can spread. The car to car incident at Topeka happened during the championship, not the prosolo finale for example.

if the insurance company ever calls stating "We heard there was an incident at your XXX event. Why didn't you tell us about it?"

Just for my information, does any insurance company care about anything that doesn't cost them money? I wonder as long as no claim is filed if we had a hundred "incidents" would they care?

Also I've often wondered how bulletproof our waiver is...in a court of law? I seriously doubt we've ever had an event where everyone has signed it anyway.

I agree that discussion is a good thing, but incorrect information in the wrong hands can run amuck rather quickly.

I feel pretty good, because I didn't start this one. It was one of those damned STSers, though (wouldn't ya know it?).

Not bulletproof at all. Just a first line of defense. Just think about it this way - if someone sued THSCC, the club would likely be shut down. Even if we were right, they were wrong, even if we would or could win.

It's happened to other clubs before. I'd like to minimize the chances of it happening to us.

Now if someone wants to start a thread about "the perils of Sanford" or "how to run a safe event" or "what happens when things go wrong", let's do it! But we don't need incident specifics to learn and pass information along to others.

I personally think things should be kept low profile and not discussed on the internet. An insurance agent can access this site and make someone's life miserable.

Not without either a court order, or paying membership dues. :)

Sorry. Didn't expect it would heat up like this. At the least I think people on the forum know how everyone stands on this topic. I certainly know more than when I started and that was the goal.

Maybe we should get back to talking about cheater tires again.

Please explain to the new folks what you mean by "cheater" tires? Are you implying that if someone runs in TIR on high performance tires (not DOT R compound tires), they are cheating?

I am joking!! Just keeping up the "cheater tire" running joke. I don't see any emoticons in your posts, but I assuming you are playing along as well.
