I am sorry that the day ended on a sour note for three of the key players in this past weekend's Coastal SCCA event in Wilmington.

This was their second event in three weeks and they did a great job. My hat is off to Ryan, Kevin, Rob, Vern, Bill and Jennifer for a job well done. I know I have missed some other THSCC members that are putting a lot of effort into getting this organization going. I apologize for that. Feel free to chime in.

They pulled off what every spreadsheet and experienced competitor says can't happen. Nearly 100 drivers on a 48 second course with no overlap. We started around 11, finished before 5 and everyone got 4 runs in. Go figure that one out. It was simply due to their hard work and effort.

They used about every inch of the site to set up a pretty cool course. We ran the course twice per run. Right before my heat, I started to panic, hoping I would remember that I had to take a second lap and I would not get too excited and try to take a third lap, as my friend Ken tried on his first run :)

The site was about half of the RBC west lot and the surface even made Sanford look good. The safety stewards insured the course was safe and the spectators had great viewing. I am kind of liking having a lot of spectators :) Maybe we need a couple of safety stewards?

These guys and gals are putting some good events on. It was nice running in Wilmington. Set the cruise on 85 and was there in about 90 minutes.

You can't leave us hanging like that, what happened to the three players?
Don't need to name names, or place an blame or such, but if there was a incident, I think it's good to know the facts and analize it to learn how to prevent a similar occurance.

Thanks for the kind words Jim. I dont think a person left the site without a huge smile. My inbox is full of emails from people who are looking for more sites in Wilmington. Right now that is the only event planned in Wilmington, but I have a feeling that may change.

I have a new respect for all the people who do the behind the scenes work AND then go out and run smoking times. I havent been able to do it at these first two SCCA events

Any who...., next installment of "Down East" autox, will be May 30 in New Bern at the Twin Rivers Mall. Unfortunatley I wont be there, I'll be in PA in a wedding

I think Jim was reffering to this : http://www.4g61t.com/thsccforum/viewtopic.php?t=1013

There were no incidents at the event itself, just the abuse of some poor tires

Relax Charles...there were no incidents at the event. I was referring to the mishap that Ryan and Kevin had on the way home from the event. The Coastal events are run under the SCCA guidelines and they have at least two safety stewards that are responsible for the safety of the event.

If there were any incidents, I would not put them on a forum, just like THSCC does not mention theirs. You trust the officers and event organizers to learn from them.

OK sorry I asked.
Miata damage shouldn't be too bad to fix, Ryan's car going under the bumper saved a lot of damage it looks like. Bet the paintless guy I go to in Cary could fix all the metal wrinkles, new plastic license plate panel and bumper, some paint...

Dude, were you tanning out in the grass area beside the theater? Your face was as red as a tomato!

For those who missed it I had to check and see if Jim's car had a needle under the nose and brass tabs to pick up current from the track. He had apparently removed the magnets that hold the car down too. So what looked like from the timing trailer to be a slot car was actually a real MR2. He beat everyones A$$ bad. FTD and FTP. My car is a bit down now so I drove Kevin's Miata and had a blast running is CS even though his car is a pain to drive due to the lack of caster.

Jim, thanks for the nice words. We were shocked by the number of people that turned out for the event. We had expected something similar to the New Bern event, maybe 50 to 60 drivers. It turned out that we had 96. We had, I believe approx. 400 people sign the waiver as drivers, crew or volunteers. As you witnessed, security was pretty tight. There was also at least 100 observers across the street that didn't get on sight. I think it was the combination of the first really nice day in a while and a lack of things to do in Wilmington on Sunday afternoon. It was truly an event and the drivers and the cars were the main attraction. Thanks to everyone who helped make Sunday a success and that includes anyone who was there in any capacity.

Thanks for the good press Jim! All we can do is the best we can with what we've got to work with. I think we all were amazed at what had been achieved by the day's end. I know I was. What will we do when we have 120 show up at May's event?!
