Can I change shocks/struts to Performance to replace the worn out ones I have and still keep HS? And can I add a set of Ground Contol springs and still run HS? buth are extremely worn out and need to be changed. after 250k miles and new stuff isn't available and after market is hard to find also. I want to add sway bars from and AE86 corolla would that change class too?

im pretty sure, you can change the struts or shocks to aftermarket and you can only upgrade the front sway bar. Doing springs, or a rear bar would bump you.

old cars (10 or 15 years, someone with a rulebook can confirm) can also run stainless brake lines.

The shocks, in addition to mounting the same as stock have to have the spring perches at the same height as stock, but the other dimensions can vary a little bit.

Clutch and brake hydraulic lines can be replaced with solid or braided metal for car manufactured before model year 1992. "Speedbleeder" type brake bleeders may be used.

Dale,

I ran one autox last year on the gti stock suspension with 265k miles on it and clearly it needed some new struts. I put in some koni reds which are relatively cheap and adjustable and set em to pretty much full stiff. Car definately controls weight transfer a bit better now. It rides kinda crappy on the street now, but its fun. If you struts are suspect I don't see any reason to not go to some kind of decent performance shock.

Hmmm, front bar eh?

Seems kinda silly to do it on the front wheel drive gti. But it might be worth it to keep the car on the ground a bit more. The rear is still gonna come up, but would it help to keep the inside front down a bit and get me some more grip on the front potentially?

If you Can lift the rear easily on a FWD car it won't hurt to put a front bar on it. On a strut based car it will more than likely make it handle better because the body roll will be more controled and give a better contact patch for the front tires so the handling will be more consistent as well. I added a front bar to my Cavalier last year and once I dialed in the right amount of camber my handling was mucho improved. The car will not lift the rear tire more than 1/2 inch at any given time anymore.

PS. Oh yes the inside front wheel will spin more if you add a front bar, the bar will allow more weight transfer across the front which will allow you to smoke the inside front. It's not a big deal you'll just have to have a softer foot. It's a trade off for better handling but it was worth it for me since I don't have alot of power in the first place.

Also a bigger front bar will help in transistions, however you do have to have more speed control into corners as it will understeer.

Thanks guys!

I know of some old G60 front bars laying around. I'll definately have to give them a shot. I don't think I should have any real power or speed problems. :) Seeing as how the gti might make 80hp on a good day. Shoulda dynod it just for laughs the other day.

The "peeing dog" stance is funny and all, but a little more level car would be nice, especially if it means i can eeek a little more grip and contact patch out of my inside front.

did I mention it's an 83 toyota corolla rwd? it's pretty much a dog ehrn it comes to power but overall it handles pretty well other than the struts bottom out in real hard turns. Bilsein is the only company that has struts for it and they are now discontinued and I'm having a hard time finding them.

but what gets me is that mounting a set of Azenies is more performance than adding a rear sway bar. the tires are more of an advantage than the sway bar.
