So, I was looking at allowable mods in STX for the mustang next year and came across a new listing for cars per SCCA. The new class is STR. All info can be found here, but this is still in draft form.

http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo_Rule ... _draft.pdf

Allowed cars are....

BMW M Coupe & M Roadster (1998-2000)
BMW Z3 (non-M)
BMW Z4 (non-turbo, non-M)
Datsun 240Z, 260Z, 280Z, & 280ZX (non-turbo)
Honda S2000
Mazda Miata (non-MazdaSpeed)
Mazda MX-5 Miata (2006-09)
Mazda RX-7 (non-turbo)
Nissan 350Z
Pontiac Fiero
Pontiac Solstice (non-turbo)
Porsche 911 Carrera (3.2L) (1984-89)
Porsche 924, 944 (non-turbo), & 968
Toyota MR2 (normally aspirated) & MR2 Spyder

If you've wanted to hit the ST class, here's your chance.

I've kicked around running the Miata this year in STR, but I think the 2000 Miata in light STR trim (i.e. coilovers and slightly wider than stock tires) is probably less competitive (overall pax) than the M3 in it's current STU trim. Decisions, Decisions....

Wise words from another forum...originally applied to STU, but may apply to STR as well:

"The idea (behind STU) is to take a really nice expensive street car, make it uncomfortable and barely streetable, then not let it run DOT R's, so it'll go slower than the stock version of the same car."

That's probably not always true, but it makes me laugh

Keith V and I had a long lunch at the end of last year considering the possibility of moving our S2000s to STR. We've both decided, for now, to not do so. Let the "early adopters" figure out what the car to have is going to be. I still hope it ends up being the S2000 though. That way, if they're ever obsoleted in stock class, I'll have a place to take mine.

If you're building a Solo2-only car, and want it nationally competitive, then I agree. :) But, the Miata is already heading toward mild CSP trim thanks to race seats installed for track, and I like the financials of $61 tires (ok, twice that for a hot tire).

I thought about putting our 03 in str but wendy didnt want to. The car is def very under prepped for csp also. I think if someone can get the struts right the nc is gonna be good in str. i know 949 racing is supposed to be making good wheel selections that are going to be legal. So this year is going to be interesting to watch.

That is exactly it. Karl and I were discussing how much it would cost to convert to STR from stock and be competitive on a National level. I still want to run street tires from a wear stand point but dropping $4,000 on suspension and power parts so I can spend less on tires seems kind of contradictory right now, and that $4k is just to get the gateway modifications.

Aaron knows all about spending money building an ST car.

I honestly think just about every local only autocrosser would be amazed at the level of equipment that the ST guys show up with at National events. Many of them have $5,000 in just their shocks alone!

It really is astonishing. I've heard it said that ST features some of the most highly developed cars in all of national solo, and I believe that. I don't know if STR will get this way immediately, but it's not impossible to imagine it getting there within a few years.
