My boss just had his 02 Windstar die in front of the office at work.

A little research shows that the Windstars (esp with the 3.8L motor) had some regular trans problems requiring a rebuild.

Any recommendations for a transmission shop to do a rebuild? Down in Southern Pines, I know a few places I *wouldn't* take it, but that's about it.

Let me check with a friend of mine at IBM. He lives towards Holly Springs and had the same thing happen to his Windstar and had it rebuilt. - AB

I had a co-worker who just had his fail as well. His was an 02 with I think the 3.8. A thrust bearing failed between 1st and 2nd gear clutch pack if I remember what he said right. He seemed happy with the shop that made the repair, but it was in N. Raleigh.

Thanks!

Both references would be useful. He has AAA, hopefully his mileage limit could get it to a shop anywhere in the area.

He used...
Cottman Transmissions of Raleigh
4001 New Hope Road
Raleigh, NC 27604
(919) 875-0660

They are a chain, but the guy didn't recommend the one in Cary FWIW.

Anways, I think it cost him about 2100$ and took about two days to completely rebuild. A reman unit was not used. My co-worker said the technician was very friendly and open.

He might want to check the price on a Ford remanufactured unit (or even a NEW tranny).
Price might be close to the $2100 for a shop-fixed unit.
