Is there any place that I can purchase a windshield?

I had one put into the Camaro last July. On the second out lap, a Porsche threw a rock and cracked it bad. I figure this to be an ongoing issue and it would be cheaper to do it myself.

I watched the dude put it in the Camaro, it is not heart surgery.

Pilkington glass will sell you a windshield plus the urethane adhesive. I have some Betaseal urethane that is out of date but still may be usable.
I will have to dig up the address and phone number.

Pilkington North America
Suite 500 409 Airport Blvd Morrisville NC 27560
t:+1 919 481 2242 f:+1 919 481 2248

It is not rocket science but a few special tools help.

Be real careful you get the right adhesive. Unfortunately a can't remember what the good and bad stuff is. I have been to Insurance CE classes (albeit put on by glass replacement vendors) and seen the difference between windshields that are put on with the cheap stuff. They can be real unstable and pop out with very little stress.

Is it legal for the CMC guys to run Lexan instead?

It is a 1992 coupe. I think any third gen 82-92 will fit it. Yes, it is illegal to run Lexan in CMC.

I call the place George listed and they do not sell to the "public". But they were nice enough to refer me to Safelite. So a new windshield from Safelite is $83. I figure $20 for the right-angled cutting tool and another $20 (?) for the urethane.

It does seem that hard. Probably the toughest is cutting the "old" one (it is only 6 mos old) out. Leaving a small amount of the old urethane in place. People recommend doing 2 or 3 test fittings prior to laying down a 3/4" bead of new urethane. I guess you only get one shot at it :D

Thanks for checking Jeremy. I have 50 days to do it :-) so right now time is on my side. I checked car-parts.com and there were no used ones in the area. Most of those places wanted $75-$150 for a used windshield any ways!

Jim,
Have you thought about using window clips instead of re-cementing the glass in. Use your old ahesive for a base ,drop your new windshield in, fasten 5 clips, run a bead of caulk to keep the rain out and your ready to go.
Nice thing is ,when the next Porsche throws up a rock, you can change out your windshield in about five minutes.
I've gone through about five windshiels in the last six years...works for me!
Chris

Well, the new windshield is in. I bought a cutting tool at Northern and it was pretty much useless. Came to find out it was not the tools fault, more on that later.

So I resorted to a finer and more elegant means for getting the windshield out. Yes, you guessed it, a BFH. It was kind of fun to tell you the truth. After softening it up a bit, I put the heat gun to the edges and your a right angle putty knife to pry it up. A little more heat gun and scraping and it was ready for new glass.

Pick up a windshield over at SafeLite for $83 and a tube of sealant. Wish I had talked to Chris before applying the sealant. The guys over at SafeLite were pretty helpful and told me there was no difference between the Northern tool and the ones they sell. It was my technique that was wrong. Live and learn.

Applied some sealant and dropped (that probably is not a good term to use when discussing windshields) it right in. Naturally, the old weather stripping, old is relevant because it is only 6 months old) was not going to cooperate. So the hell with weather stripping, this is a race car and I probably saved a few ounces of weight that is high up.

How much do I trust my first windshield install, you ask? About as much as I trust my first motor rebuild. So I will be adding 5 windshield clips to it before race day. :D as Chris has suggested.

Now would I suggest you do your wife's windshield? Hell yes. Invite me over so I can see you explain to her how you saved $100 doing it yourself.
