Just my two cents :

Sony KDS 50A2020

replace the 50 with 55 or 60 for the larger models

or looks at "last years" model and replace the 2020 with 2000. Sony claims the only diff is the the newer one has a black enclosure instead of silver. Both are 1080p, excellent black level and contrast, HDMI, etc. No PIP or cable card if that's important to you.

Best Buy has these displayed but mail order is cheaper , you can have the 60" in your home for $2100 the 50" is closer to $1500. ...

I've had this TV for about 6 months in the 60" size and couldn't be happier.

Are these the ones with the "Green Blob" issue? IIRC it shows up on some units on start up before the bulb fully warms up. After warm up the color is normal, but some units it lasts longer and longer until it does not go away.

Yep ... green blob, yellow smear - just depends. Consumer Reports rates rear projection sets as less reliable than LCDs ... although they rate Sony as more reliable than average.

Always a tradeoff somewhere ...

So far I have no green blob issue and mine is a later 2000 rather than 2020. My co-worker who bought an earlier 2000 does have a minor issue. It was my understanding that Sony fixed this problem in the fall.

Well so far I've learned that these TVs have blobs on some of them and most are documented. This doesn't sound good long term. I also found out that there is this "rainbow effect" that some people see and others don't. So you need to go watch one for a bit and make sure you don't have that issue.

So to stay within budget I see 2 TVs that look acceptable. You can find them on Best Buy website. The Sony is deeply discounted. The Mitsu isn't.

Mitsubishi 57" 1080p DLP HDTV. $1599
Sony 50" Grand WEGA, Rear projectcion LCD HDTV, $1899 (on sale $1199).

There is also a Toshiba 56" DLP not shown on the website but on sale in the store for a pretty good price, around $1200 or so.

I have to say I'm a Mitsu fan over Sony but I'm not up on this technology at the moment. I'm trying to figure out how a Toyota works...

God help me I've gone ricer (not that there's anything wrong with that. Just to be PC and all for the sensitive Subie guys).

Graham,

Rainbows only apply to DLPs - they are caused by the spinning wheel. Not all folks are effected - I know I see them but I don't consider it objectionable. Most likely to be noticed during large changes in screen brightness.

My comments about the Sony only apply to lcos rear projection (SXRD), not the LCD rear projection sets.

The new Samsumg DLP's that use a LED light source don't have spinning wheels. They are also quite expensive (for a DLP). Cool TV's though!

We bought one from Best Buy. It lasted EXACTLY seven days, then didn't work. It ultimately turned into the most bizarre customer service nightmare EVER from not only Best Buy, but also the service place that Mitsubishi uses in Cary. And to think I even spent 400ish bucks on the "extended warranty".

We ultimately ended up bringing it back to WORST Buy right before the 30 day return policy was up because, despite TONS of phone calls to Best Buy, Mitsubishi, and the service company, no one had actually come out to look at the TV. (We ended up having to pull the trouble code ourselves.) 2200 bucks after taxes and the extended warranty and they wouldn't even give us the time of day.

I am a Worst Buy customer no longer.

Scott,

Very true. The LEDs cost more than the "bulb" and that is reflected in the price. Reviews indicate that black levels suffer too. A number of technologies exist to defeat the rainbow effect but none seem to be as cost effective as Lcos.

Of course, I'm still comparing myself - I don't own an HD set .

I was part of the original HD test in Raleigh that WRAL did many years ago ... Called the "Living Room Study" or something like that and presented at the NAB show that year. A Meredith prof had a grant to run a focus group and they actually paid us $300 to watch HD for a month. The serial number on the set they gave me was something like 003.

I see rainbows on our 1080p Samsung DLP we got in January. Mostly I see a flare of color when I dart my eyes across the screen rapidly. It does not bother me too much since I'm rarely darting my eyes.

If you are a hockey fan you might want to avoid DLPs. Bright whites can cause a silky screen effect where you can see little stars all across the screen. This happens with most projection screens.

You can buy 3rd party warranties. I got one that was recommended on the avsforums:

Haha, I was scrolling down just to say the same thing. I have a mini, and an 11 year old tv from Sam's. Either I have nothing to compensate for or I am just cheap.

Well I picked up a TV. Pretty reasonable price. $1100. Sony 55" Grand WEGA LCD Projection HDTV (KDF-55E2000). Swapped out my Digital cable box for a HDTV box. Watching cable in HD is nice, but watching DVDs in HD is excellent.

Now if only my favorite TV stations and movie channels would pick up the pace and start broadcasting HD...
