Just wondering if anyone knows of a good local place with stocked exhaust hardware for the DIYer. I'm planning to learn how to weld by making a custom midpipe for the Subaru and evenually headers.

So I'll be in need of some flat flanges, formed flanges, hangers, mandrel bends, etc. You guys know how this stuff goes, you start into the project and then find out what you need.

Anyone seen any places around with anything in stock? Of course Advance/Auto Zone are useless for this stuff.

R&J would probably sell some of this stuff to you. He was willing to work with me to get me flanges but he couldn't get them in stainless (I had them cut on a local waterjet).

I got my mandrel bends from:
http://www.performance-curve.com/

The rest of the exhaust bits (mufflers, etc) - whoever has them cheap on e-bay. Road Race Engineering has a bunch of this stuff, too.

Hangers - buy some solid metal, heat with torch and bend as needed. Much cheaper than the $10/each hangers I was seeing.

Good luck. I just got done doing a decent bit of exhaust welding on my project.

+1 on Road Race but they are a PITA to deal with on shipping.

Good advice, thanks. FYI I've been surfing on ebay for hardware too and came across "Mandrel Bending Solutions" which has most of what I think I need:

http://stores.ebay.com/Mandrel-Bending-Solutions

I called them to find something they didn't list (a 2.25" formed flange) and he told me to look at this site to find him a part number to order:

http://www.theflangeman.com

It's a distributor - need a Tax ID Number. I just called Adam L at Black Forest and talked him into letting me start an account with their company info.

So I should be able to get anything on that site within 3 days -- they ship from Ontario. Any requests?

If you want 3" V-Band flanges (I think usable with 2.5" pipe) - the SS Autochrome stuff is beefy for $40. Summit Racing also has V-Band flanges for about the same in 2.5" and 3" but I _think_ the flanges may be mild steel since mine had some surface rust on them when I got them.

For the money, I'd rather buy $40 in V-band and not have to use a gasket than $40 in two flanges + two gaskets + decent hardware to fasten them together. Plus, it makes things easier to install.

Just some more food for thought if you are going to make headers and join them up to another pipe...

Oh yeah, don't turn up the heat too much on stainless tubing and either back-purge or get a tub of Solar Flux.

Ping me if you have more questions, Mike.

Regards,

LOL :)

I remember when that place used to be a Goodyear. The dude who owned it was cool and would mount and balance tires for my Civic Si I ran back in 2000, for $10 per tire on the car. I went there to get the 205's mounted and it had switched over to Phantasm. They said they would do the work for the same price.

I get the car back... it took them 3 hours  I then went to take a wheel off, and the lugs wouldn't budge. I had a friend who had a Snap-on torque wrench (3/4") that went up to 220# ft, and it would click like crazy but couldn't budge them. Obviously, they put the wheels on with an air wrench and no torque sticks. The torque spec was around 80# IIRC.

3 studs on every wheel spun in the hub after trying to loosen them with an air gun. Phantasm paid Honda $185 to have all of my studs/lugs replaced ;)

Needless to say, I wasn't giving them good word of mouth praise after that ;) - AB

I have a Tax ID number. Maybe employing a nanny will be good for something after all.

I've always used my SSN# for Tax ID in the past and it has gotten by.

My Tax ID should be coming shortly though.

By any chance.. have any of these places had good deals on the flanges for BMW's?

That so far is our main hold-up on getting some of these exhaust setups sold..
