Okay, I am an idiot and can not find the posts dealing with the different dynos in the Triangle area.

Any input would be appreciated.

That's where Scott held the dyno day. They guys there are not only professional, but a lot of fun as well. Anyone up for another dyno day? Once I get the car back together, I would be glad to organize it. - AB

It will be a while. He broke his back. There are no weekend appointments until the new year. He might be able to squeeze me in during the evening after Thanksgiving.

There is a place in Cary called "Eurospeed Performance" that has a Dynapack dyno. I haven't used them myself but I have heard good things about them. From the looks of their website, they might be a little bit pricey...

The first time I heard about them I was coming out of Pet Smart carrying 60lbs of cat litter and food (gotta feed the lions) when a young kid (late teens probably) came running up to me. He noticed the front-mounted intercooler on the Miata and proceeded to grill (heh, pun) me about the car. He then handed me a business card for the place and said he hangs out there all the time. He was a little disappointed that I hadn't run the car at the drag strip but seemed like a nice enough kid.

Anyway, I've since heard a few good things about them from a few BMW and Porsche guys I know. Not to worry, it wasn't Whitney or Plank! :P They might charge BMW and Porsche-type prices but it might be worth checking them out.

Man, I just noticed they even have "Eurospeed Girls". Might be way out of our price range...

If you see "Amber" while you're there, tell her I said: 'sup girl!

I have not heard much good about the eurospeed shop. A guy I bought a fender from told me about them leaving one side of the hub dyno locked and the other unlocked while they did his car causing some damage. I put the mustang on their dyno at Korman's open house awhile back (before I heard bad things) and when they were done Alex didnt latch my hood so it flew up again the locks at 70 mph on I40. They were nice enough to put a wide band on the car after the cats what good is that if the cats work? I say stick with some professionals like the folks at CAM.

Well that stinks.

The couple of guys I know that used them are in the Greensboro BMW club (or whatever it is called) and went to one of their dyno days (with a couple of their Porsche buddies tagging along). They said they got great service from them but, then again, it looks like Eurospeed caters to mostly if not all European equipment. Maybe they just aren't careful when it comes to other makes, who knows?

I tend to like the dynapack more than the dynojet for a number of reasons but not if the operators don't know what they are doing. Or are careless...

Anyway, I didn't even know there was a dyno in Cary until earlier this year and it seemed like a good option if time is limited and you can't make the trip to Durham. Now that I live in Durham, that is pretty much moot for me but it could be an option for others. As always, YMMV.

At Eurospeed's opening, a bunch of us went to check it out, hoping to support a local german tuner and make some friends. Didn't turn out as pleasant as we could have hoped. Attitudes and egos aside, the technical aspect of it wasn't great either. I wanted to have the Corrado dynoed, but they could never get it to work with the dynapack. They made excuses like I had an LSD or a bad clutch or something. I've got neither. Supposedly, things are being done better there these days, but I'd still rather take my business to a more professional and agreeable shop.

Jim and all:
Eurospeed Performance in Cary has just become a Tarheel "Supporter" (check the latest H&T Page Two). They now offer all THSCC members a 15% discount on all dyno testing, including general baseline runs and tuning.

Not sure what the starting price per pull is, but you might check them out.
Speak with Stephanie Pike. The number is 919.858.8852

They will also run "Tuning Days" for us if we can get a few folks together to make it worthwhile...

Guys,

If you haven't done so I highly recommend generating a set of "reference accelation times" using a stop watch, a deserted stretch of road, and the car tach. You can supplement the stop watch and tach with a g-cube to get the shape of the power curve. Back in the "old days" I did LOTS of comparison runs using a normal autocross rpm range for the particular car to verify that the engine was still healthy (or not) and to see how various changes like air filters or mufflers worked. Even found that I had the cam timing way off after replacing a head gasket on my 260Z by verifying the "seat of my pants" impression with actual data. It was very effective at taking away the common "pre event" concern that the car wasn't running right. Make sure you eliminate as many testing variables as possible or you won't be able to really trust your results.

I'd be up for a dyno day if you want to organize one Aaron. I need to back up all these hp claims I've been throwing around. :-) Preferrably a dynojet dyno though. The dyna pack, while having its advantages, is less widely used and generally reads lower, if I had a baseline with a dynapack, it would be fine, but alas, I do not.

I went to Eurospeed with Jason once awhile back when they first opened. Jason nor I were particularly impressed.

Actually dynapacks ususally read higher that dynojets, good for some people's egos :D

I would prefer to go to use the dynojet at Carolina Automasters for two reasons:

a) I did my baseline pulls there.

b) With the group rate, not only where they cheap, but they were very good at what they did, and we all had a lot of fun doing it.
