It's been a while since I last had a Trans Am. To put it in perspective, my last Trans Am was traded for a Shelby Charger Turbo, which in turn was traded for a Miata from the second truck the dealer ever received, which I then autocrossed at the first ever Streets of Wilson event. It's been a while since I had a Trans Am.

So this upcoming year I'm back once again where I started in F Stock, this time with a 1994 with the 5.7. I'm also back where I started in terms of knowing any of the local business that might work on one, i.e. I know nothing. So...

-- I need a tow hitch for a tire trailer, also capable in the future of pulling a sailboat. The Trans Am is rated for 1500lbs, and I'd like a hitch that can take it. With the low rear bodywork, I'm guessing I need something special. What do I get and where do I get it? Any chances it will fit with the aftermarket (catback) exhaust?

-- I need to get the wheels pointed straight. Straight, as in zero toe, and the most negative camber the factory specs will allow (-0.5 degree, as I recall). Who around here will not only be willing to do a customer-specified alignment to a domestic car but also get it right?

-- It needs, um how to put this, work. The price was right, the car runs (and autocrosses) very nicely, but it has a lot that over the next year or two I'm going to want to fix. Some of it are those jobs that are nasty enough to pay someone to fix, or require a Tech1 tool and so on. Of course a lot of it seems to be electrical -- no surprise, of course, but I'm not good at electrics. Who might be willing to mess about with that, and other nastiness like hoses and so on? My first priority would be to get the ABS working, just in case I overdo the right foot on those sticky autocross tyres I'll be transporting on the trailer for which I need the hitch...

(Okay, so I tend to ramble on, even on a first post to the forums. But unlike in person with beer, in a post I actually stop.)

1. Chris Schimmel would be able to help you out if OTC ones don't fit.
2. See Howard at Sturdivant's

Both are club sponsors and their information can be found on the main page.

Hidden Hitch makes a class 1 that you can install yourself. The hitches are not a big deal.

For set up information there is no one better than Sam Strano at www.stranoparts.com Be sure to check out their Q&A section.

The best online information is at www.frrax.com No BS, just people that roadrace and ax f bodies.

Those two sources should address 99.99% of your questions. I had Rick Hendrick Chevrolet in Durham do the ignition work on my 92 1LE. They did a good job and the price was fair. They have one mechanic who specializes in the f-bodies.

Craig Gelston at Carolina Import Works on Capital Blvd does a great job. He's worked on two of my bodies, my Vette, and even my family cars. He does great work at a fair (not cheap, but fair) price. His guys can fix about anything. Craig is himself a road racer and a club sponsor. Give him a call.

You can get a hitch for your f-body from several places. The U-Haul stores were able to get a hitch for my 91 Trans Am pretty cheap. There is also a trailer hitch place on Capital/Downtown Blvd that did a great job for me on a different car, but they are a bit pricey at times.
