I'm thinking about going with them for the mini. OEM glass installed for $247, including a full cut and replacing the surrounding trim pieces.

Seems high I know, but Flow Mini wanted $500! I guess the curved windshield makes it pricier, or something, as from what I've read online, $247 is a pretty good price. Safelite wants $210, but thats non-OEM glass.

I thought that third party glass was an upgrade on the Coopers?

I'm late on this thread, but if you want a great warranty, I've got the place for you!

As many of you know, my daily driver up until we got the MINI was my '82 Toyota. In '86, I had a windshield crack that got replaced through my insurance by a mobile unit from Windshield Glass out of Greensboro. About 6 years ago, I guess (maybe more; I can't remember), the windshield started to leak. I remembered that I got a warranty from them saying they would replace/repair the windshield if it ever leaked as long as I "had" the car. But, unfortunately, I couldn't find any kind of paper about that.

2 weeks ago Carl and I were cleaning out the Yotie and, low and behold, there in the center cosole was the warranty card! And, yes, you guessed it -- I called 'em up to see if they'd come fix the leak. :D They were very pleasant about my crazy 20 year old warranty request and they showed up last week and the guy worked on it for ~1.5 hours salvaging the good windshield (I was afraid they wouldn't be able to get a replacement if this one broke), cleaning out and replacing all the sealing material.

So, while I can't totally guarantee that they do the best work in the business (I don't know how long replacement seals *should* last and we'll see how this new sealing job works out), I *can* guarantee that they *will* stand behind their warranty! :D

Windshield glass of Greensboro used Ever Ready glass (me) to do a job in Chapel Hill once. At the time Ever Ready was cheaper and would have put in OEM glass. They also have a lifetime leak warranty.

George,

Are you back in the glass business? Let me know if you are. I need to replace 2 windshields and I like what you've had to say.

If not, guess I'll have to follow up one of these other recommendations.

thx

I do not see myself getting back in the glass business any time soon. To do so I would have to make a sizable investment in specialty tools. Also I cannot buy the glass for as cheap as some of the chain guys can have it installed. (economy of scale)

But never say never. :soap:

Sorry to hear that George.

Bobby, I would recommend SOS Windshield. They are one of the companies that come to you. Very nice guy and was able to get OEM glass for the Mustang without any problem...twice (I wanted the little pony icon at the top of the windshield)!!! He did have to replace the cowl piece on the Mustang after it didn't want to bend, but he had that back on the car the next day. He also replaced the windshield on my old van before we sold it.

Very good and highly recommended.

HERE'S THEIR WEBSITE

If the windshield ever develops a stress crack though, it will only be covered under factory warranty if its OEM glass, thats why I went with OEM. For the record, we went with Raleigh Glass and they did excellent work, for a great price, I was very happy with them.

That doesn't fall under the installer's warranty?

not sure, perhaps it does, can't hurt to have dual coverage though I suppose, as they will likely try and point fingers about it. I've heard good things about PPG glass (that its a bit less prone to chipping), but given how new the car still is, I saw no reason to go away from OEM, especially since I've read that stress cracks aren't all that uncommon, although moreso in the earlier cars than the '06s (although I don't know what they changed).

My experience with stress cracks is that they almost always happen within a couple of weeks. At my former place we usually found an impact point on a crack that happened after a few days. If the windshield has been replaced by an aftermarket person then the dealer usually will not give any warranty.

On aftermarket glass I usually found that PPG had the best fit to most cars. Pilkington fit well but tended to be a little small which made it harder to get the mouldings right on BMWs and 'burus.

I have not had any experience with Minis. The oddest had to be Ford vans that were converted to bullet proof glass. Yes rocks will cause to outer layer to crack. They were a 7 layer sandwich of glass and lexan glued onto a heavy steel frame.

Tiny stone chip yesterday below the parked wiper blade resulted in an 8 inch long crack overnight in my 2001 Mustang windshield. Crack lengthened another 6 inches or so on the drive to work. Raleigh Glass & Mirror was recommended here and by Crossroads Ford. New OEM (Carlite) windshield installed today in the parking lot at work. They had the windshield in stock. Excellent work. Full cut plus "primer" over any area that was scratched during the removal (all hidden after the install). Watching the tech use an electric "jack hammer" powered blade to cut the seal was "interesting" (he tried a manual tool but the windshield to paint clearance was too tight). The jack hammer tool is used inside the car. Zero deductible insurance paid by State Farm so I assume price is competitive.

I'm nearly to the point where I feel compelled to have the windshield on the S2000 replaced because it's so badly pitted. Strictly speaking, I can see out of it, but it's pretty freaking awful. Given that the car has only 50K miles on it and it's already this bad, would I be better off getting a non-OEM (as in, other than Honda) windshield put in it? Do PPG (or whoever) windshields hold up better?

This is a pretty common complaint with S2000s. Just wondering if the aftermarket glass has a chance of lasting a little longer.

Yes. Because windshields still break.

Resurrecting again -

Windshield pitting on the SVT is bad - Miata is even worse.

No luck having a tree branch fall on either one (that's for you, Cline  )

Current recommendations? Price is an object, since both will be out of pocket.
