Well, it's done. The guy from Glass Doctors came out and did his job. He was super nice and had been doing this for I think he said 8 or 10 years. We talked about what a full cut method was, and I watched him do exactly what the articles I've read about it said.

It appeared to me he removed the windshield without cutting or scraping any metal. He probably did somewhere but I neither saw it nor heard it. He put protectors around the edge of the hood where it comes close the windshield to make sure he didn't nick the paint with the tool handle. I thought he took great care to protect the car and do a careful job. I was pleasantly pleased.

His technique for cutting the glass out looked smooth and professional. He cut down the excess urethane afterwards to a thin layer with a smooth surface. I watched him carefully clean it the surface and saw him put primer all the way around to cover any nicks or scratches he might have made. The replacement glass was made by PPG and seemed to fit perfectly. When it was done it looked fantastic and even the new molding he put back on around the outside of the windshield looked as good to me as the factory stuff.

Of course, it hasn't been through a rainstorm yet, and any rust problems could take years to show up. I'm not an expert on glass installation, but I can tell when somebody takes their time and cares about doing a job right.

All in all, I was satisfied. It took him about an hour and a half for everything, including the time to talk to me about what he was up to. He was a great guy and I'd call him back if I needed to. But now that I know what George does and where he works... I can just go see George for the next one, right?!.

The nice thing is, my wife is happy it's done and I didn't have to interrupt her day to transport and leave a car at a shop somewhere.

Thanks for all the advice! And George, thanks for the education and tips. Sorry I didn't get my act together sooner and come see you.

Miles

Sounds like you got a good installer. Where I work we have had several ex Glass Doctor guys work for us from time to time. Apparently they keep the good ones and send the bad ones down the road after a while. When you need your next windshield I may not be at Ever Ready anymore. At Ever Ready if you are not family you are the last to get a raise.

Job hunting. :D

Dredging up this old thread...

I have a long crack in the windshield of the Civic and it needs to be inspected. While it may pass as is, I figured now is as good time of time as any to get it replaced.

Since enought time has passed (and George may not be with Ever Ready anymore) I wanted to poll for updated recommendations. Insurance will be paying for this.

George was with Ever-ready in October. Did my Focus and did a great job of it.

I am still there. :furious: But I am looking hard for another job.

BTW If you want a good cash price do not call Ever Ready. They soaked Steve Blalock for a backglass R and R. I am getting set up to work on the side though.
Stay tuned.

I had Glass Masters in Durham replace the windshield in my M3 last month. They did a great job. I would highly recommend them.

Ok, I have an appointment for 10 AM with Ever-Ready. I asked the scheduler who it would be and she said "George". So, assuming there is only one George there, I am going to get to meet Mr. Bright and watch how he he does his thing!

Don't be so sure. BMW was had some glass issues on the minis and I am no sure that you would want the same brand. Talk to someone in da bidness.

We can get OEM glass. You need to mention this when setting up the appointment, so we can get the insurance company in a head lock to cough up the more expensive windshield. The other makes we install are OEM quality and are OEM on a number of makes.

George if you wanna stay in the business I can probably hook you up with a job at Triumph. A very good friend of mine is their regional manager. He's always looking for a good installer.

PM me if you're interested.

As of this morning I no longer work for Ever Ready glass. I am among the ranks of the unemployed as of this moment.
