Will be stripping the A/C stuff out of my Miata soon.
Anyone know of an A/C shop which will drain the system and accept the refrigerant for FREE?

I remember discussing with someone at Mark Senior's bash, but hte Corona's hav wiped mi membery bakn of the detaisl...

At the price of that stuff, I think smaller shops might be happy to take it.

Am I FOS here? Alternative is sssssssssssssssssssssssssssss......, not really. 8)

There is a $10,000 fine if they get caught taking it out of you system and using it in another system if they don't have it reconditioned first.

Brad,

Two places I'm aware of in Durham who offered to do it for free:

Mikes Transmission Service @836 Mangum St Durham (682-7591)

Sullivan's Garage Inc @ 1731 Fletchers Chapel Rd 27703 (688-2816)

I used Sullivans because they were available for me to go on over when I called. Mike's was available later in the day but I wanted to get it done quickly so I'd have more time that day to take the AC out. (Actually only took a couple hrs to get out.. as usual things tend to come out easier than they go in  )

You may want to call some of the smaller shops in your area to find something closer. Don't bother calling larger, chain type shops they will want to charge at least $35.

call Craig at Carolina Import Works, they do A/C
and would be racer friendly.

Finally got around to making a few calls and found just the place---in beautiful Fuquay-Varina!!

Quality Auto Care off 401 South. Owner Joe Diniz (New Yawk transplant) volunteered to pump out the system gratis. After a chat while he was doing the dirty deed, I figured out why: R12 is now going for... get this: $1,300 per cylinder! Not sure how much a "cylinder" holds, but I figure the 1.7 lbs. of R12 he pumped out of my Miata was worth more than whatever he could have charged for 30 minutes of labor.

Anyway, he's got a pretty nice shop. Little cluttered, but he's got all the right gear. Had a couple of Z-cars and a C3 Corvette he was working on. Sounded pretty competent and would be willing to take all the R12 he could find. So if you're pulling out the a/c system on your track car and want to remain environmentally responsible, here's one place you can go.
