So, I recently purchased a OBX LSD for a friend of mine who has a B16 powered Del Sol. It seemed to get decent reviews and it came with a "Lifetime Warranty". Although, it hasn't been on the market for a long time. Upon installation it seemed to work ok. However, after attempting to take the transmission off the car after a week or so proved to be quite difficult. Although, the OBX unit is supposed to be a copy of quaife's ATB unit it appears that isn't exactly true. Trying to remove the passenger side axle is nearly impossible. Infact, we had to destroy the axle to get it out. In the mean time, and also ended up bending the tranny housing.

Here is a picture of the problem...

So, I contacted the vendor I purchased it from and he agreed to return it to OBX for inspection. 2-3 weeks pass as I wait for a decision.
Here is the Conversation that followed...

(7:42 PM 5/12/2005) Me: Any word from OBX?
(7:47 PM 5/12/2005) Honda-Tech vendor: Its being shipped back to me. They said they only cover manufactor defect damage. That this doesnt fall under those terms as a manufactor flaw. So it will be shipped back to you within the next 3-4 business days .

So, I arrive home yesterday and the OBX LSD is sitting on my front door.

So, with no other choice left I call my credit card company, and dispute the charges. I was initially worried that I wouldn't get my money back b/c I paypaled him the money, but my CC doesn't care.... Money returned. Although the product's purchase price was refunded, I'm still left with shipping costs, a damaged axle, and a damaged tranny case.

So, I wanted to post here as I know some of you own Honda's or might know someone with one. Please share my experience with them, as OBX is obviously not a company that stands behind their products.

I'd heard persistent rumors that they were going to be putting out an LSD for the Neons (and by extension, the K cars since they use the same diff) and $350 sounds a lot better than $1200. They're available now, but given these shennigans, I think I'll wait until Quaiffe makes up another batch.

Unfortunately, that's not until the end of September. Drat.

Fortunately for us honduh boys we have more options... I'm happy with my quaife, and I've also heard good things about Kaaz and OPM LSD units.

While perhaps not as widely available, the Torsen (aka Zexel-Torsen, Torsen-Gleason and now Toyoda-Koki Automotive Torsen North America Inc) are also an excellent manufacturer of helical gear automatic torque biasing differentials.

Yeah, for the K-cars it's just Quaife and OBX, and I now have another excellent excuse to put one in. My transmission's got to come out in the not too distant future anyway because the freaking timing mark on the new flywheel is about 8 degrees off from where it should be.

Thanks, Fidanza.

I understand where taking it out bent things, and it was stuck.

But I'm missing what exactly was failing, performance-wise, that became the reason to remove it? Or was the tranny coming out for some other reason?

(I have no opinion on the device or its quality or the vender, I'm just lost in the story. :) )
