Do we have any members who paint houses?

If not, anyone have a good experience with one recently?

Yeah, I guess that's slightly important. :)

Exterior.

Leave the windows and doors open and get both at the same time. :D

I just got my house done by this guy Todd Robinson. My Mom found him to do her deck upgrade and he is awesome. Reasonably priced, great quality work. And, he shows up on time, stays inside his estimate, and doesn't leave a bunch of crap all over your yard when he leaves for the day.

I intend to have further rennovations done on the house by this guy, and I have referred a number of friends to him. All have been well pleased with the work. Email me at work and I'll give you the contact info.

okay, we have a few painters that are coming to give estimates.

Does anyone have experience or any knowledge of that new spray-on vinyl? Looks interesting, but the idea that if they mess it up, then I have to get new siding, doesn't sound very appealing.

Jason,

I don't have any tech but the idea scares me: Think REALLY thick paint that may or may not adhere well, may or may not allow moisture to escape from behind the siding, may or may not have good, uniform sunlight resistance and color consistency, may or may not be practical to repair, may or may not be installed well, etc.

Yeah, and I've found out a little more. It seems like their dealers each have their own territory. So there's no competition and if you have trouble with the one guy, no one else can come to correct it. I think that's a big no.

Okay, so we already had an appt with the spray-on vinyl guys before we had decided that we weren't going to consider it. We humored them anyway, and listened to his spill to get a quote.

Well the quote to spray our 2 story house was $39,000!!! We haven't had a paint quote yet, but I have a feeling that is a little more then 2.5x what it will cost to paint our house.

Maybe we should look into having it bricked.

Have you considered doing it yourself? It's far from a fun job, but not impossible. I painted my last house, took about a month of full weekends and 2-3 hours a day after work. Good exercise. I had an estimate to paint that house (1800 sqft, 1.5 story) and it was like $8000. I think I spent $400 in materials when I was done.

My new house is too tall (and too damn big), so I plan to only paint the first floor myself when it's due.

I also got a pressure sprayer when I did my garage, OMG is that fast. It puts down a LOT of paint in no time. The trim (if you do it by hand as I did) will take you 10x as long as the siding. It's amazing.

How about we start a housepainting co-op? I'll volunteer 1 day of labor if you give it back in, oh, 7 years or so :)

My house (1700 sq foot ranch) cost me $2500. That included the following:

- Extensive repair to water-damaged siding
- Power wash the exterior including the patio
- re-caulk everything
- Repair to sliding glass door and frame
- Install gutters to solve moisture problem
- paint the entire thing including the stucco on the foundation
- cost of materials

The gutters were 500 of that. The complete recondition of the exterior of the house was $2K.

I painted exteriors of houses one summer in lower Westcherster County NY/Connecticut. I worked for a company named Flying Colors (competition to College Pro) and we had teams of 4 people. I was the onsite 'manager' (how frightening is that?). Long and short, I got a lot of experience painting houses (I even painted the former Governor of Connecticut's (Weicker) house and guest house.

Mike is right, if you have the drive and the motivation, it's very inexpensive to do. It just takes time and patience. For most of our deals, even when you factor in labor and materials, there was more than a 50% uplift on the job. - AB
