I have some scrap that needs to go, not much, and i'm not sure if shocks/struts can be scrapped or not.

The only thing I value I have and looking to get some money for is 4 total oem catalytic converter sections off of 5th gen V8 Camaros. It's four cats per car, so I have 8 total. Everything else is 4 cast iron manifolds, some lower controls arms, and shocks/struts.

I know the cats bring some money, around $140 is what i've seen them go for per set, the rest I really don't care about, so if somebody makes scrap runs it's yours. Otherwise if somebody knows of somebody who buys cats for scrap i'd appreciate some contact info.

I know there is a place in Sanford on Horner blvd. but I'm sure there is someplace closer in the triangle area.

I have used this place in the past...

http://www.americanmetalandparts.com/

They are in Garner, but Google shows multiple places around the triangle (including Durham). I had a handful of things (old rotors, a cat, etc.) and took it all in at once. If I remember correctly it's roughly by material and weight and I think they may also have fixed amounts per cat size. Be prepared to provide ID as they track those who bring stuff in due to metal thieves showing up to sell stolen stuff be it copper wire, manhole covers, cats, etc.

I used this place as it was recommended in an other thread here and I work downtown Raleigh so a trip to Garner was easy for me.

Yeah, no worries on the ID since it came off my own car. I know thieves have been known to cut cats off brand new cars in dealer lots.

I've used this place a few times. They are right off of 70.

EVERYTHING metal can be scrapped (ok, they don't like it when you bring them un-exploded ordnance).

I wish I were closer as I'd be all over this.

For the shocks and struts, drill a hole in the bottom of each (wear eye protection as the gas charge will release and potentially spray some fluid). Then just move the shock rod to push the fluid out. That will please the recycler when you tell them :)

Ryan is right, they will take about anything metal. The guys that loaded up my Celica shell gave me the low down on these places and the money they make doing it. - AB

I just made a scrap run today and got $64 for a couple of hundred lbs. or steel and misc. copper at Lee's off 64 in Raleigh. They scan your drivers license there and you have to step out of the truck while on the scale so they can take your picture. I make multiple runs a year there taking old appliances, water heaters etc. from our rentals and from what I have seen, they could not care less if your shocks have been drilled or not. However, your cats may be tough to get good money for. About a year ago I had a cross pipe with 4 cats on it and no one would take them because I did not have whatever the required documentation is (I found them years ago while cleaning out a property). You may want to call around and see what is required documentation wise.

Go east, Honey Badger doesn't care out here. I have sold 3 cats to Foss Auto Salvage in the last 4 months. They don't fetch nearly as much as they did a few years back.

Recyclers are giving low scrap prices as of late around 8 cents per hundred pounds.
The cats and aluminum in the Durham area can only be sold if you are attached to a business, this is due to the rampant thievery of these parts . Oem cats return higher prices because of more platinum content. After market cats are truly low grade and will net you about a third as much as OEM.
