Anyone know where I can get a few pieces of mild steel plate? I called up Dillon, but they only sell it in 4ftx8ft sheets (Anyone want to go in on some steel?). I need 2 14"x16" 3/16 pieces. If it's a bit bigger I can likely cut it down.

While the minimum size at Dillion is full sheets (same goes for pipes and tubing), they may cut it down for you (free or low cost) to make it easy to transport and in the end, you might get a better deal going with a larger sheet vs. finding someone else that will sell you a pre-cut smaller size.

Depending upon the cost, I would consider going in with you. What thickness are you talking about?

Richard

3/16 would work fine for me. I could go up to 1/4" if you need thicker.

If going in on a sheet I need 14"x48" , that would leave 82"x48" left. Dillon charges $15 per cut. I also forgot to ask how thick their cuts are. If they do it with a bandsaw it won't be much, plasma will be more.

A sheet of 1/4" was 181.11. I forgot to get a price on 3/16ths. Steel prices are usually fairly linear to weight so I'd imagine $130-140 for a sheet of 3/16.

Have you checked MetalsDepot.com or OnlineMetals.com?
They sell cut sizes and shipping isn't terrible.
Also might want to call Raleigh Sheet Metal : (919) 828-6549
I have only bought sheet steel from them, but they might sell plate.

Lowe's sells small pieces of metal, but it doesn't seem cheap.

Just gave Raleigh Sheet Metal a call and they only go up to 1/8".

The online places aren't too bad, but I only need about $20 in steel. Shipping alone for them is $20+.

Tractor Supply also has a decent steel selection.

Ended up splitting a sheet with Richard. Dillon worked out well. A 4ftx8ft of 3/16 steel came out to $137+ tax. Very cost effective compared to retail if you can make the full sheet work.

In more workable units. I got 3 14"x16" pieces of 3/16 steel for $33 total.
