glad you got it.

I've had luck with a similar method in the past, but my epiphany was to put a washer around the broken stud then stack a nut on top of that (larger than the stud as you mentioned). The washer acts as a protective plate to keep the wire from sticking to or damaging the head (or whatever the stud is broken off into) and allows you to get some good molten metal down into gap between the center of the nut and the broken stud to get a better grip on things.
