So I'm building a fence (or part of one since my neighbors have one) and I want to copy the design of theirs so there is some continuity. Unfortunately their fence builder didn't use defactor 5/8"x5.5"x <height> pickets that are butted side to side and instead used 1x4s (.75x3.5) vertical pieces with a 1.5" gap between. I have measured and priced out the amount of 1x4 lumber I'd need and it's going to be almost triple the cost of doing it the same way with 5/8x5.5 pickets which is just nuts. I even priced out 1"x4"x12' pieces that I'd cut in half (highest point is 6') and that only reduced the cost by like 15% or so.

Anyone know where I can get a good deal (not HD/Lowes) on bulk quanities of pressure treated 1x4 lumber?

Can you rip the standard sized picketts to match? Yes, it will be a huge PITA, but if you want it to match...

Of course I 'can' but that would be insane....I think I need 160 of them so there would be a ton of waste too.

Would it still be cheaper even with the waste? Sounds like you want it to match, and be cheap, but can't have both.

Hmmm, with the waste it might not be much cheaper because I'd need to order more of the 5.5" wide boards and rip 2" off them times 160. In my first post I implied buying fewer 5.5" boards since they cover more ground.

I'm going to call Talberts to see if they'll work with me even though 160 isn't quite a 'contractor sized' order.

Tarheel lumber on hwy 54 has the 1x4x6' lumber for a lot cheaper but the 4x4s and 2x4s are more expense so given I'd have to pay 2x ~$60 for shipping: one order from Lowes (which is walking distance from my house but the $59 delivery fee is fixed...) and one from Tarheel Lumber would probably make it not worth it....

There is a place in Sanford. I'll try to find the name of it but they supplied all of our boards and posts and they deliver.
