My house go broken into on Friday morning and the door frame was pretty damaged. I have put it back together with 28 2.5" screws and boarded it up from inside as a temporary fix.

Anyway, there are vertical windows on each side of the door so just replacing the jambs that, otherwise, would butt up to the 2x4 structural frame is not straight forward.

Any suggestions in the Durham area?

For a cheap quick fix, buy a security system sign on eBay, stick it in your yard and make your neighbor look like an easier target.

I've never used him myself but the guy who works on most my neighbors houses' is 'Troy Halsey'

halseyhandyman@gmail.com
facebook.com/halseyhandymanservice
919-730-1268

When I get to being less lazy (this is pretty seriously lazy) I was planning on calling him to get a quote on replacing the railing on my stoop and replacing the cap on the chimney.

James, you can't post this and then just walk away. What exactly happened? Did they take anything? I assume they broke in while you were at work. Did they catch these dead beats?

Yeah, broke in around 10-11am (they opened the fridge and the internal temp was around 68 by the time we got there at 6pm so it had to be early). Busted the door in and stole just my xbox 360 and Nexus 7 and went through my underwear/sock drawers looking for guns, drugs or money (none of which I had). The onsite alarm was going off so they had to get out soon. They have my N7 serial number in the system to cross ref at pawn shops etc and I have it setup to brick soon as they connect to the web. I didn't have an SN written down for the xbox so the Microsoft Enforcement Team can't track the IP/location of it. Forensics got a lot of finger prints off the door to the fridge and the garage door handle that are not Laura's or my own so we'll see if they get any hits.

The absurd thing is they passed up tons of other much more valuable items which were all out in the open in the living room etc. Police agree that it was probably some kids and given I very erratically work from home, it was clear they weren't staking the house out since I worked from home the day before.

I work with, or have Dave Johnson do repairs for me. His number is 919-623-1192. He is a retired airline pilot, a bright and all around good guy.

Sorry to hear about the break in James. What Rob is jokingly saying about a getting a dog is actually true. The guy that has cut my hair for the last 7 years or so is a retired police captain for Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. In the 25 years on the force, not one burgulary that he investigated (think thousands in his career) had a dog living there. Not ONE. Theives, even kids, don't want something that is unpredictable that might bark or worse, bite them. - AB
