We got a few holes in the roof from an old tree that fell. We also want to get rid of the shingles as they are about EOL.

Any good recommendations for a Roofing company to replace and repair?

Tom Buzzard

Did ours 6 years ago. Had one minor issue crop up at a vent housing recently during a severe rain storm, and he had guys out there within ~1 hr to fix under warranty. Stand up guy with a good crew. Has references from a large percentage of the homes in my neighborhood (and I'm sure around Raleigh).

+ 1. Did a great job for us in 2006. No problems. Recommended by a picky friend who hired him after watching the crew do one or two neighbor's houses. Probably not "cheap" but we got what we paid for.

I guess Tom Buzzard did not want my business. He did not show up.

Tom showed up at my house on time and is very thorough. Came back promptly with a detailed quote and explained it all along with options. He has many references right in my neighborhood. When he found out I worked at SAS he gave me several references to check at work also. If we sign for him to do the job he will also provide addresses to houses with all the shingle styles and colors we are looking at to go see before making final selection. At this point we are doing the whole house, garage, porch, etc as it makes no sense to just fix part of it. Roof/Shingles are 25 years old. We have one other roofer who is in the running that is doing my daughters house now. We're making our decision next week but I'm leaning towards Tom doing the work.

The only drawback to Tom is he will not work with your insurance company. He is very sour about them and the stunts they pulled on him. The other roofer was fine working directly with insurance company.

We did have Tom Buzzard do the roof and he did do an excellent job! Efficient, on time, gets it done, leaves a clean site, and comes back to audit the job with the customer before billing. I would recommend him.

Reviving this thread from the dead.

Any other recommendations? I've got requests for quotes into the ones listed above.

I ended up using Best Skill LLC
Fabiano Cunha (919) 771-7597

He ended up doing a very good job for around 80% of the insurance company estimate. After he left I found only 2 pieces of shingles that had ended up somewhere in the back yard.

BRADLEY ROOFING & SHEET METAL, (919) 832-4107

Talk to Tim Bradley, he did my roof this past spring. Great work at a decent price.

Here is an update on my experience finding a roofer. Either these companies are really busy or they don't want my money.

Tom Buzzard:
http://www.tombuzzard.com/
Going with this one. He was the only one that actually answered the phone every time I called. Came out the next day to do a quote. Gave us an extremely thorough estimate with diagrams, pictures, neighbor's houses they worked on etc. I don't know what he did in his past life but he sounds like an engineer. Very maticulous and answered all of my questions. We'll see how the job comes out in a few months. He was not the cheapest though and it took a week to the the quote.

Baker:
http://bakerroofing.com/
These are the gold standard in our area. A friend of mine who is an home inspector recommended them. Came out to do a quote in about a week from contact. They have people that that is probably all they do. Very professional and an instant quote. They were only $15 apart from Buzzard for a 40 square job. We nearly went with them and probably could have, but I liked talking to Tom better and also got instant contact with Tom without having to go through receptionists with Baker.

Bradley Roofing:
https://www.google.com/search?q=BRADLEY ... =firefox-a
After a bit of phone tag, got a quote in 2 weeks from first contact. I did not have a chance to meet him, but seemed nice on the phone. His quote was 10% lower than the above mentioned ones, but he left out a lot of steps that the others included, like membranes in the roof valleys, replacing stove pipes, etc.

Huffs:
http://www.huffsroofinginc.com/index.ph ... textform=1
After 3 weeks of calling once a week, I could never get them to commit on coming out to do a quote.

Cole Brothers:
http://www.colebrothersroofing.com/test ... actor.html
Never returned phone call going on 2 weeks.

Anyway, we will see how Tom does in November.

So I'm running with Tim Bradley (thanks for the recommendation Rodney!) and he came in a bit lower than everyone else, but most importantly to me, has been around since 1918 and seems very reputable. He's the 3rd generation owner, a local fellow and they're located close to me so I know where to find them if it starts leaking again. They're installing a EPDM membrane commercial style flat roof on the rear of the house to replace the V5 metal panels that shouldn't have ever been installed.

As far as the rest of the home, he's letting me select whatever type of shingles and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what to run with? He was also the only one to email me pics of the findings and volunteer to replace the archaic silo style attic vent in lieu of something more modern.

Man, I must have spend 10 hours researching this and have to say I'm really disappointed in Baker as I wanted to give them my business since they sponsor local cycling and I hear their ads on ESPN radio. The tech came out, never followed up so I submitted my info again hoping for a call back and still no response. Business must be good...

Buzzard was super nice too and they'd be a close second.

My only advice is that it's worth getting many quotes because the pricepoints can be all over the board.

-Matt
