I have to say Stephen's comment, Aaron's experience, and the whole sketchy contingency thing is just a marketing nightmare. How do they expect to release all this hype about being better than the A6/R6 on paper and yet make them hard to get and not have as good a contingency offering as Hoosier........ALL THE WHILE Hoosier is working on releasing the new AX/RX?!??!
Some it comes from the fact that the SCCA has an April 30th deadline for any new tires to be "approved" for competition use for that year. They have to give them six different sizes to inspect (which includes DOT approvals prior). I think because of the tight timeline, Goodyear cobbled everything together to make the date. Otherwise, no one could run them legally for the 2011 season.
My experience doesn't surprise me much, but didn't make me happy. The Goodyears would save me $112 a set in the same size, but if they don't work well on poorly cambered cars, I have no interest. While our A6's are wearing out in about 40 runs or so, they are at least wearing evenly across the tire. It's just a heavy pig of a car.
I don't think that Hoosier will release anything different this year. If Goodyear has a great showing at Nationals, then expect the A7 to hit the market shortly after... and it will probably just be an A6 with a softer compound, which to me is not a good thing. - AB
