And the prospect of spending 2 hours in actual physical proximity to y'all at a monthly club meeting is far too revolting to consider... ;-)

That'd be a 2.5 hour one way drive... seems a bit unreasonable :D

Seriously though, an online means to register and pay wouldn't be a bad idea. - AB

Come on guys it is not hard.

1. I filled out the form and printed it out.

http://www.thscc.com/general/forms/mem_app.pdf

2. Wrote a check. (Remember they taught you to write in elementary school.)

3. Printed an envelope in Word.

4. Affixed postage and sent it in the mail.

All this with a Sam Adams in hand.

I agree, it's not that hard to post it in the mail. I've just gotten so used to doing everything online. It would be a 2 step deal:

1)submit form online
2)paypal the money

Can even be done from my phone and no paper. Oh well, I'm all paid up now.

is ease of operation actually progress or is it truthfully less cost effective for the vendor?

my own experience is solely based on credit card exchanges but i must admit the fees and commissions i pay to the facilitating partners are in a word, scalding highway robbery.

eventually someone forks over profits for others ability to live life easier. rarely is it the grassroots working man getting the break on the expenses.

i'm just sayin'

Good point about the costs....you would have to be careful about how the accounts are done. As you say, credit cards can nail you. But a basic paypal accnt can receive payments from another paypal accnt for free. The upgraded accnts with credit cards are the ones that get you, even if you don't use credit cards. I'm not sure how the other vendors do it.
Mailing has it's costs to consider too: stamp, envelope, checks, etc.

That's the problem with Paypal though...from the club's perspective, they'll have to have a Paypal account level that allows for more than the basic free transactions. If not, there are restrictions on the amount you can receive per month and the amount you can move out of Paypal per month (as I found out this year when having to upgrade my account when selling a bunch of stuff). Hence, every payment will be debited the Paypal transaction fee. If this is the biggest hangup, the simplest solution would be to simply reflect that charge forward to the user, so if you renew via Paypal you pay the membership fee plus the Paypal small addition (or round it up to a $1 or whatever).

I'm guessing the club has a long running manual procedure of processing paper membership forms, so someone would have to create a dual process now of paper and electronic and create all the checks and balances necessary for both to co-exist.

Ok, a free market solution....

Pay pal me your membership dues + a small handling fee* and email me all your information. I will fill out your membership form, put it in an envelope, attach a stamp and put it in the mail to Bowie. Since I live in Greenville and Bowie is in Wilson, its VIRTUALLY overnight shipping.

*Handling fee of $20

You can pay pal your membership fees to ecugrad97@yahoo.com 8)
