X-Games Helps Rally Racing Sport

APEX, N.C. -

A rally racer from Apex said this year's ESPN X-Games in the beginning of August has helped give the sport more exposure.

Matthew Johnson has been rally racing for over 13 years and placed sixth in the X-Games. He said the course was challenging and he is proud of his accomplishment.

Rally racing has been around for years but is just now becoming popular. Johnson said it is no long a motor sport but an action sport that can be compared to skateboarding and BMX bike racing.

"The future of rallying is yet to be seen. Now after languishing in the back roads for 30 years, we have some mainstream exposure through the X-Games and people are learning what it's really all about."

Johnson said he got his start in the Triangle with the Tar Heel Sports Car Club. He said people should start with a sport called Autocross. Autocross is a low speed, safer race that you can do with your personal car.
