Can someone recommend a program to do some simple editing to some video from the track?

I have Microsoft Windows Movie Maker but I seem to be real good at making it crash, often.

Pinacle Studio Media Suite. You can get the Titanium Edition (loaded) off their website for $70 (regular $100 minus $30 rebate). I got the Platinum version at Best Buy at Christmas.

I'm using it to convert/edit old VHS tapes onto DVD. I also use it to convert and edit my track sessions. It's easy to use. They will try and upsell you all kinds of crazy effects/filters. Just ignore it and use what comes in the box. It's more than enough. You can read in existing DVDs, connect your DVR and import it, etc...

The only pain to these products is rendering the final video that you want to burn. The rendering process takes several hours on my system. I start it rendering and then go to bed. You'll need a beefy cpu, lots of memory, and a lot of disk space. Once the process is done you can delete all the temp stuff and get your space back.

I use Movie Maker all the time, I own copies off the Pinacle editing software and Adobe Premiere but I end just going back to the windows movie maker in XP.

At what point is your compute chrashing at Ryan?

I've used a bunch of different progs though the years. One thing to consider is what you'll do with the vids when you're done. If you're just going to keep them all on your hard drive or burn them to CDs or DVDs as data disks, and you're OK with always playing them back from a computer, then all you need is a video editor. You just render your final product as MPEG, AVI, or whatever format you know you you'll be able to play back in. I don't know what version of Windows Movie Maker you've got, but WMM2 is getting good reviews. I've also used Ulead Movie Factory before and liked it- I used Version 2, but they're up to 4 now.

If you want to burn DVDs that can be played on a regular DVD player, you'll need a program to do that, and there are lots of choices there too. Popular choices are Sonic MyDVD (I think it is) and Nero.

Some video editors can also author DVDs, either as built-in functionality or as an add-on package, which potentially simplifies the process, but some DVD authoring tools are better integrated with the video editors than others, so read the reviews. I see Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4 got a good review on CNet, but I'd look for other reviews as well before buying anything. FYI, CNet shows DVD Movie Factory 4 as being available for $79.00, but you've got a lot of good options for less than $100.

Hope that helps some.

The best thing I can say about Movie Maker is to make small files and then join them together. If you have several runs, make a separate movie of each and then string them together. Windows Movie Maker does not like big BIG files, and trying to make your movie/video in hi res counts as a big file. As long as I am working with small projects, Windows Movie Maker works very very well for me. Save often, as it will free up rmuch needed ram, and be sure all other resource hogs such as Explorer and Photoshop are closed. Just close all other programs to be safe.

I am now using Adobe Premiere, but it is by no means an instinctive software. Having used WMM helps, a bunch, but you still would benefit from a tutorial book before breaking out this software.

Let me know if I can help out with your project! 8)

I'm confused. What does a PC need to "accept" the output of a VHS player in order to convert to DVD. Assume the tapes are ones we recorded over the years. We will be buying a new PC and are trying to figure out what hardware it needs. We probably will not be taking video input directly from cable TV, etc. just from old tapes so I'm assuming we won't need a TV tuner card.

Thanks!

If you have a video camera you may be able to use it to "convert" the signal from your vcr to something your computer will understand.

No video camera. However, it appears that my aging brain forgot that vhs recorders, including ours, have RF outputs. This "should" mean that I can send the VHS player's RF output to the RF input of an analog PC TV tuner. If so, problem solved.

Even VHS will be better quality with s-video, assuming your VCR outputs it (and the source video is decent). This one is rather expensive, but I could swear I've seen similar around for <$50

Thanks,

Our newest VHS has s-video and the tv tuner card available with the current candidate computer appears to have an s-video input.
