Both club laptops are currently in need of some parts and service. I'd like to get them to a place in north Durham called Triangle Laptops, but it's way up here and I can't easily get them there during business hours.

I'm looking for someone who can either drop off and pick up the laptops there sometime next week, or point me to a place closer to Raleigh that could do the same work. Unfortunately the guy who we bought the "backup" laptop from has stopped working on them, as he would've been a great choice.

Thanks!

I am all over it. I live in North Durham. That is about 5 miles from my house. I work in RTP. Let me know what I can do to help.

Does this mean I can edit results for the NEXT autoX before I return them? :)

Carl,

Can you tell me what you are looking to have done on the laptops? I still have various parts for the Dell CP, CPi, and CPx laptops. If I can help, let me know. I don't know what Triangle Laptops is going to charge you, but I'm sure I can save the club a lot of $$$ (you get my time for free :-)).

I'll be glad to help if I can. I will be out of town Fri-Sun, so call me if you would like to discuss.

Hey Brian, thanks for the offer! I'll contact you offline later to make arrangements.

Rob, the "old" laptop needs 128M of RAM so we can install Win2k, which is needed to run AXware. I can do the Win2k and AXware installations, but I need to source the mem chips. Also, both laptops have stopped working off of battery power for some reason (as in you unplug external power and the machine goes dark instantly). Yet at least the battery on the old laptop (don't have the other one here) shows it's got a good charge, so it appears the laptop doesn't "see" the battery. That's the service part.

The memory is easy to install, there is usually a little door on the bottom that you just unscrew. Then you just slide/snap it in. Just have to make sure you have the right kind.

As far as the battery, where is it showing good charge? On the task manager in the lower right? Or, are you checking it on the battery module itself? The taskbar charge indicators are quite un-reliable. I would bet it just needs a new battery.

Ya, I can put the mem in, it's just that we don't have it yet.

As I said, I only checked the one laptop, but I checked the battery module itself. The systray icon is no help, since the laptop is either plugged to external power (plug icon) or off.

What is the make/model, memory spec, on these laptops?
I might be able to come up with the memory sticks.
What configuration, 2x64Mb, 1x128Mb etc ?
(I assume it has 2 Dimm slots and you have 1x64Mb in it now)

Btw, My daughters laptop did the same thing with only working off AC. Even though the battery "acted" like it was good it wasn't. I put a new battery in it and it worked fine.
