I was supposed to hear back on what the Maggie Valley organizers were prepared to commit to us today. I didn't.... and I had told them we cannot even evaluate this "opportunity" properly until we know what incentives they can offer. If and when I get those details, I will be sure to pass them along right away. We may have an evaluation of the lot by somebody that has actually autocrossed before on Monday. We'll see.

Graham.. just a few thoughts on your post:

Quote:
All the NCCC clubs already have events planned. NCCC uses the 3 major 3-day weekends to run events. Memorial Day, The 4th, Labor Day. These are posted in Dec/Jan. So I doubt this would sway them. Also the Corvette Forum annual Cruise-In is a big sell out. Bowlng Green will be mobbed with Vettes that weekend. I've never been but it is a great event from what I have heard. The Maggie Valley event will not get those people to switch. That has been planned for a year.

Graham, I'm sure the things you listed will have an impact. You must remember though that the Corvette Forum is a national, if not international forum. This event would apply to a fairly regional crowd, so I'm not surprised if it isn't making a big buzz. And the Maggie Valley folks have not done much to get the word out yet. The big autocross weekend events that NCCC runs I would think affect mostly autocrossers, which is a very small percentage of those that would sign up for this weekend Corvette deal.

This event in Maggie Valley is not being marketed at all as an autox event. The autox part is somewhat of an after thought. If we do it, they will list it as an optional activity, but this is not intended to mimic a NCCC autox. The Bowling Green event might affect their numbers some and the Maggie Valley organizers are aware that is a competing interest. I was told yesterday by the organizer that some folks which had already signed up for the Bowling Green event decided to go to Maggie Valley because they had already been to Bowling Green so many times. So who knows how many people they will draw?

I think if we ran an autox there, that one way to ensure we don't take a bath financially is to allow a fairly high entry and market it to other autocrossers in the region. We are allowed to have our own members and anybody else for that matter, participate if we run an autox. We just have to be careful that we have plenty of spots for the Corvette guys as well.

It is entirely possible that all that will come of this is that THSCC gets an opportunity, sometime later this year, to run an event of our own there for our THSCC mountain getaway, IF we wanted to do that. I don't know about you, but Maggie Valley sounds a lot nicer in July or August the summer heat of some of our typical bake in the sun sites!

Stay tuned.

Miles

Miles,

Not trying to rain on the parade. Just stating some events that are very popular with the Vette communities. And will take away from their possible audience.

There is no info on CF, CAC, or any of the various registry sites even in the Regional areas. If we were to decide to go ahead with this I would get it posted on all of those forums to help muster up bodies.

I've found a couple of folks that I have communicated with on CF that happen to be in that area. 1 is actually a MV native. I'm going to ask him if he can go take a look at the lot surface and condition and give me a report. Hopefully he can do it this weekend.

Graham

I just found this thread. I have a place in Maggie so I can help out as much as needed. I have done everything from course set up to worker chief to timing.

We have referred the organizers to Highlands, and they have shown interest in picking this up. If they do it, they might be willing to have some Tarheel folks come and help or run the event.

Highlands has decided to move forward with the Memorial day weekend event at Maggie Valley. No reference on their forum to the fact that THSCC dropped this into their laps.

The site is described as being in great shape and being huge. It is larger that the Greenville, SC site that was used for the NCAC. Pictures of the site are available on their site.

We throw 'em a nice, big, juicy bone and we don't even get a by line...nice. You're welcome!

I actually received a very nice letter from the president of Highlands thanking us for the recomendation.

Our efforts have not been overlooked.

I don't know that I'd say that surface is in "great" shape. It looks like it would be good for one or 2 events, but look at all the cracks in it. A little autocross abuse is bound to start throwing chunks left and right.

The details of the event are on the Highlands website. I would imagine that if any THSCC folks wanted to run that they would let us in, subject to any event entry limits.... but I don't know that for a fact. Scott, do you have any details about that? When the idea for this event was being discussed with Tarheel, the Maggie Valley folks wanted the Corvette guys to register for this event through their system for signing up for the event. It may be difficult for us to know how many slots are really open. After the cold reception we got in the club, I wouldn't imagine too many Tarheel folks want to drive that far.... but I will say that the view of the background in those pics is beautiful. I hope some Tarheelers will try to go just to give us a first hand account of the site conditions.

Highlands details here:

http://highlandssportscarclub.com/maggie_valley.htm

Maggie Valley event paragraph here:

http://www.maggievalley.org/maggievalleyevents.html

And some of the Corvette clubs have at least begun to publish it in their event schedules on the website. Here's one example:

http://www.casualcorvettes.com/

Any Tarheelers want to go play?

They recruited Hoppe and Miranda to teach class! I bet he's already forgotten us. :)

I guess we made a good decision to pass on hosting this event. They had 57 drivers total (low by even HSCC standards). There were four Corvettes, of which two of them are HSCC regulars. So much for a big Corvette turnout for the autocross.
