Thanks for the offers for help today. Mitch Moore was here almost all day working on the bus AC and he was able to give me a hand with the new hatch install. There were a few gotchas during the install, but I managed to get it in (took 3x longer than I thought it would though). The interior PA noise level should be MUCH better now than it was with the temporary plywood hole cover.

Also in the good news department - we found one (minor) AC leak and fixed it (man it's nice to have good AC tools - Mitch has a leak detector!). Mitch pumped the system down and refilled with (godawful expensive) R134a. AC is up and running in the bus! We're still not 100% sure that there isn't some other minor leak, but we'll check the system pressures at the next couple of events and see if it's dropping.

Bowie and Vincent came to pick up the bus and take it to Greenville. The major work is done for a while! There are some minor "continuous improvement" things to take care of mostly at the events, and probably one more bus day this summer, but for now I'm going to say the bus is DONE!

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work!

Meantime, y'all can ponder the list of future to-dos:

Posted SUN 04/17:

Been a while since I posted an update. The big news is that we pulled the trigger on the dual wheels, which we should have done a long time ago. Stability problems are GONE

Overall we're in good shape. Dustin and I spent some time today building a new corner-stroage unit for the brooms, canopy, shovels, and other tall stuff. It should do a better job than the temporary box we had in there at keeping stuff from flopping around and tearing up the walls.

The bus is leaving Tuesday for G'ville (thanks to Vincent and Bowie) and will travel next weekend from there to Clayton (NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN DRIVE IT THERE ON SAT!). After that I expect to leave it there in Clayton (if Bret will have us) or maybe Four Oaks for a while. SO, I'm trying to get all the major stuff and loose ends wrapped up so it can be out of my hair for a while :)

Also, FYI the bus will be used at the Rockingham HPDE and TT in June for infrastructure (mainly PA) support. Rob Harvey is working hard at perfecting the PA system and adding some improvements (weatherproof remote PA speakers and an FRS radio tie-in for remote organizer announcements) for this event.

I'm also going to post another "special projects" thread about some other longer-term projects that need to be handled. Between the BMW farm Rally-X and the June TT I expect to organize one bus day (probably May 7/8 or 14/15) to take on some of these things.

Some info about the FM transmitter:

The FM transmitter (currently set to 91.1) now has a range of at least 0.3 miles, maybe more under line-of-sight conditions. This is slight improvement over the 100' range we had before :) Also, the wireless PA now works up to 75' or so from the bus. Very nice - thank Rob H and Ron S next time you see them. The PA install is quite nice - we should also have reduced the feedback quite a bit by mounting the speakers "inboard".

Side door fold-out step - plan - Joe Dobner?
I broke my hand a couple of weekends ago and since I just had to have surgery on it, I don't know when I'll be able to use it again. I've got the steps and the bracket pretty much done, and I still need to fabricate the hinges. I figure there's about 4 hours of work left to do on them. If there's anybody else that knows how to tig weld aluminum (and has a tig rig), I'd love to have an extra pair of (functional) hands. Depending on how quick I get out of this splint I might be able to do it myself next week.

P.S. The Herrings are very nice people who drove me home from the hospital in their STi.

[whine] I'm tired, I don't feel good, I'm too busy, I broke my hand [/whine] Blah blah blah, slacker.

;) ;) ;) Hope you heal fast! Sorry to hear about that! So are those grade 10.8 screws in your finger?

Bumping this thread for more updates in the top post. Thanks to Mitch I have a very high confidence that the AC will be up and running SOON!
