I used a piece of two sided tape that is used for the metal plaques. With the magnets, people have the option to temporarily stick them on the fridge/car/toolbox or whatever. If you want to stick it on your year long trophy then you just use the same two-sided tape that we have always used.

I guess you'll be more suprised to find out that we had more than enough plaques with normal adhesive on them available at the trophy session. As a matter of fact, that's all I gave out at the trophy session.

Wit a few changes to the trophies, we'll likely be saving $1000-1500 this year. Not to mention the trophy guys will be hauling about 50lbs less wood to the events (a good thing since none of them have a tow vehicle).

Eh, well, the idiots that thought up the magnetic for Laurinburg were those two Vette guys that chaired the event

They were not all magnetic. We got enough magnetic ones that were put out on the table for folks to grab in the morning. At the trophy session Scott gave out the other ones we had made that had double-sided tape. You may have mistakenly received a magnetic one with your trophy. Sorry you got the wrong one Jim.

So you can blame Miles and I for wanting magnetic and doing a screen of actual photos of our cars (provided by Kevin Allen, of course). This was not the typical approach. I told Scott that I would pay out of pocket for any excess charges to the club. We just wanted to make something a little different for fun.

Graham

5) Cost/space saving Event Trophies. The traditional wooden plaques will be presented to Novices and people who receive FT awards. All other classes will receive a magnetic dash plaque with your finishing position added to it. The larger season long plaques will be still be offered, but at a cost of $5 each for those who would like one.

Will you guys be bringing them to the meetings? Might save hauling them a couple of hundred miles back and forth to/from Laurinburg. I would be up for buying one at the meeting if it isn't too much trouble.

Graham

I like the big trophy plaque - I've used them the past two years. Puts the whole year on one piece of wood, so it saves a lot of space on my walls for other things - such as my pretty pictures.

Missed that question.

Year-long is just that. Anyone that qualifies as a novice *may* play in the class all season if they would like.

I know who you guys were ;)

I never imagined that your idea would become the defacto trophy of the club though.

Hey Jim, I have the authentic answer to that question. I AM THE IDIOT!!!! IT'S ME! IT'S ME!! Graham was being nice to share the "blame" if there is any. Graham gets full credit for the artwork though, in which he also tried some new things.

Mike Dishman and I chaired the "You Should've Had a V8!" event in September 2001 at Sanford. I wanted to try something different with dash plaques. I have a drawer full of dash plaques that just sit there because I'm too lazy and busy to organize them into something else. After talking to others, it is a common situation. The idea of the magnetic dash plaques was to allow folks a little more creativity and options for getting them out of the drawer. Even back then, we ordered enough dash plaques with conventional two sided tape to go on trophies, and those were handed out at the trophy session. I believe the same procedure was used for the Laurinburg event. Our club spends over a dollar per person per event to allow every entrant to get a dash plaque, which I think just sits in a drawer somewhere for most folks. I wanted to get them out of the drawer!

I thought having a magnetic dash plaque would allow people to stick them on their filing cabinets at work, or start a collection on their refrigerator. For folks with metal cars, I thought it might be cool to see them lined up across the door or the hood, sort of like little flags for planes shot down!

We got relatively good feedback on the event a few years ago with them and no real complaints that I remember. So, I was dumb enough to talk Graham into it and he thought it was an ok idea.

So now you know the history and who the original idiot was.
Now c'mon Jim, be honest, did you know it was me when you asked who the idiot was? :)

I've since seen the original magnetic dash plaques from 2001 on refrigerators, lawn mowers, and even heard stories of people that asked about autocross to a co-worker because of the magnetic dash plaque on a filing cabinet at work. My magnetic one is on the fridge. My others are still in a drawer, except for the ones on the year long trophy board. Where are your dash plaques Jim?

As for the idea getting support, I know it was discussed in some threads and there may have been a poll, but it was also discussed in at least one club meeting.

Just to be technically accurate, since somebody will correct me if I don't say this- the dash plaques in 2004 were not magnetic, but just used magnetic tape. The 2001 dash plaques were magnetic material, but the end result of being able to stick it on your fridge, car, filing cabinet etc. was the same.

Any more questions? :)

Miles

P.S. I am pleased to see that the new senior officers are already displaying the tact and diplomacy I saw so many times before that was demonstrated by the previous administration. I did not expect you guys to be tested before our first event though! .

So in other words a novice may now get "real" wood at every event, while a regular member can get none at all?

Thanks for your continued support Miles. Tact and diplomacy will be displayed as I for one will not be debating our decisions via this public forum. :refuse:

There is more than one definition of "public". One such definition which may apply here is:

"A group of people sharing a common interest: the reading public. "

Source: www.dictionary.com, definition no. 2 under "noun"

The word "community" is used in many of the definitions of public, which can also be defined as a "group of people having a common interest."

Thus, this is a public forum for the THSCC autocross community.

I wouldn't have mentioned this except that for some reason, it keeps getting debated if this is a public forum or not.

Yeah, way to split hairs there.

My point, only members of THSCC can view this site. The same members who pay dues and elect officers.

Also last time I looked the heading for this particular area of the site was called "Club Disscusion". So for some one to say they won't discuss stuff about club decisions here is a bit strange to me.

Someone please just tell Adam it's OK if he wants a wooden trophy when he gets one instead of the Year-long...

Adam. I think the "Year-long" qualifies as "wood" to most people who get trophies. The difference is that the year long is one 8x10 ish plaque that holds all the dash plaques (even when you don't trophy) instead of 8 4x5 ish plaques holding the same dash plaques (only when you trophy).

Now, I know you know all this. What I don't understand is the issue you present here. What is the solution you propose?

Do you want to limit novices to a year long trophy as well, or do you want to continue to offer the little plaques to non-novices as well since you believe there is a high demand for the little ones over the big ones?
