I was cautious about doing this, since back when I was an impressionable newb I heard someone complain that a driver was getting "extra looks" at the course by helping out a novice via ridealongs. I have to wonder how much advantage one gets when riding with a novice---I suspect not much, since most of the time the rider/instructor is too busy keeping them on course and giving advice.

Oh, it *definitely* helps to ride-along.

So if it bothers you that others are doing that, volunteer and do it yourself, too. I'm quite sure that too many people volunteering to help novices won't ever be a problem, but if it is someone can coordinate that quite easily so that it's a rotating thing.

But whatever you do, don't NOT volunteer to help novices because you worry about perceived competitive advantages.

Pretty sure I stated that it does not bother me. To the contrary, I am actively promoting people ride with novices in my posts on the subject. Sorry if it didn't come out clearly.

I think that surveying the novices (and others ) is a good idea. We can think we know why turnout is lower, but it would be better if we could have a better informed opinion.

I think that emailing the novices ahead of the event and getting a list of "novice mentors" who are willing to ride/give rides to novices is helpful. I found the hardest thing to do is to be able to have a novice ride with someone after they have driven the course so they can get an idea of what I am screaming at them  if I am not in the heat. Identification with a button/T-shirt/T-shirt color is also good.

LOL, how true!!! I'm actually thinking something more simplistic and something we already own. There are the lovely green safety vests in the bus that we use for the NCAC. I actually think we should make more use of these vests, especially for the grid worker. Would make him/her very visible in a sea of drivers. Anybody wanting to ride along w/ a novice could just put one on and walk the grid when they had some time to spare.

BTW, let me add, great feedback so far. I very much like Milko's idea of going over the basics at the novice meeting and making the drivers meeting shorter. Even I don't like to hear myself talk that long  . But I will admit this weekend was the exception in regard to pointing out the sponsors. We needed to have the sponsors recognized.

So we want to penalize them by making them wear one of those vests  It would make me sweat more.

Please do not talk smack about these high fashion, air permeable, visibility vests. You know you want to wear one!!

As long as someone walks in front of me with a fisheye lens I'm game.

I would love to continue to help Rob and Liz with ride-alongs. I enjoy keeping busy throughout the day. However if you make me wear one of those tacky vests I'm out. I will be glad to supply my own bright green shirt so I can be easily identified.

The one thing I would suggest, and actually volunteer to work on with my wife is a quick printed out vinyl banner that covers most of the talking points of the drivers meeting. That way, its posted, and we can buzz through it a little quicker. It would be a lot better than trying to read the tikiwiki off of a smartphone.

Brice and I can get this done and perhaps ready as soon as the next event if we get your ok Rodney.

Can we also get something for the timing&scoring web app in vinyl? That's the most awkward thing to explain to out loud in existence.

10-4 on the last 3 posts!! Please proceed!

EDIT: Brice and Mary, before you commit to print, please have it reviewed. Another set of eyes is always great and removes simple errors. Please reach out to the club if you need ANY help.
