Seven hours later, I was really bummed, stunk it up, didn't really meet anyone, packed up my stuff and as I was getting ready to leave, prez at the time, Shawn Whipple pulls up in his prepped DS yellow ITR, offers a ridealong, I jump in and have a totally new perspective of how to get through the course quickly and realized that it's okay to slide the car a bit to be quick (now I know it's called slip angle and even just read a book that explained the optimal angle and how it affects speed :roll:

). Ten minutes before this I had sworn off autocross as another 'tried that'. Just riding with a Novice and/or letting them ride along with you can really boost confidence and there's a much higher likelihood they'll be back for another event. :thumbsup:

i was the complete opposite. I knew I was going to win by default since I was driving a type R j/k . hell, i didnt even drive. the car drove itself.
Hopefully I can bring back the undefeated type R this year. non cheater car. 1st place novice for life!

I thought he was banned in the state of NC for using tools??

Wow, 150 drivers with timed entry, those were the good ole days. Me and MR2s just did not get along.

Somewhere I have a picture of him actually changing brake pads without Dave. I'll try to find it and post it :-)

Hawaiian shirts? When was that? I'd be down for anything that makes noobs feel welcomed. Seriously, let's think of something that's easy to indentify.

Perhaps we should make more of a note about our forums to get novices interested in joining (or maybe not?? not sure) and becoming part of the club socially. I went an entire year without knowing the forums existed. Had I known as a Novice I would have been a little more excited about the camaraderie and chit chat about the events. Face it, half of autocrossing is event day and the other half is studying, buying & installing go fast parts, and socializing online between events.

EEEK you said a dirty word "socializing" ;-)

We can keep posting on the forum about it but a lot of the novices don't read it frequently. I like the button/ribbon/identifying tattoo that marks them at the event as Novice Friendly so we can tell them to look for the sign of the "X" for help. Maybe give them blue vests like Walmart Greeters...

I remember when I started, people would say if you wanted help figuring out the course, or a ride along or whatever, just go find somebody in a Hawaiian shirt. Hoppe, Whipple, etc. I joined the Hawaiian shirts once I got pretty decent, so I'd be more available to help. I don't think anybody I remember wearing one back then actually shows up anymore, besides myself.
