We finally bought a new bus!

Image

It's a 2001 Ford E-450 with a V10 Gas Engine, and only 56,xxx miles, and we got a GREAT deal on it.

The best news is that the former owners actually used it to tow a trailer (though only has ~5000 miles towing), and our first test drive was with an enclosed trailer attached that was about the same weight and just a bit smaller than our trailer. Simply stated, it tows EXCELLENT. No weight bars, No Sway control - steer with your knee at 70MPH good. This bus is actually shorter than we expected we'd be buying (though still longer than our current bus), but the E450 chassis is simply that much better. The differences are pretty amazing, actually.

The V10 also makes great power, and the chassis is MUCH, MUCH beefier than the E-350.

The bus is by no means perfect, and there's probably a few things we'll need to take care of as we look at it deeper, but I think we're in a good position with this bus as a longer term solution.

It will take a few weeks or more to get the new bus ready for mainstream usage, so don't expect to see it out at the next event. There will also likely be some requests for bus day help in the near future, so stay tuned....

Just in time for Sanford (the second one), too.

I'd say the bus was a better deal than the other vehicle we bought in Smithfield today :)

I Image that V10.

Looks good! Give a large enough advance warning on a bus work day and I will make the drive from wilmington to help out.

Considering we used club funds for the bus, what was the "GREAT" deal we got? What is the plan for the current bus? - AB

Way to go and I'm glad it's final! At first glance the first two things I notice are a longer wheelbase and less overhang. Score.

Certainly a fair request.

To put the answer into context, we've been eyeing various buses over the past year that go from $15k down to ~$5k, with every one of them well above 100k miles (and upwards of 250k in some cases) and in various conditions. Fundamentally, what we've seen is that most (successful) companies just don't get rid of these things until they're well used, and only then do they come down into the price range that THSCC could reasonably afford.

This bus, with 56,000 miles cost us $5,500. We were crossing our T's and dotting our i's through the whole process as the whole thing seemed too good to be true, but as we learned through the dealings, the owners needed the money badly and needed to get this bus sold to literally make it through the next week. We still think they under-priced it, and I think they realized it too as they had appointments lined up back to back for folks looking at it.

Re: shorter overhang - there's actually a couple interesting things in play with this. While the overhang of the passenger compartment is only slightly shorter (still has double doors from the old wheelchair lift behind the rear axles), it is shorter in 2 other areas:
- the bumper itself is much thinner and solid steel vs the thick plastic covered thing on the current bus. This alone brings the point at which the trailer ball can attach inwards by probably 6" or more
- the receiver mount is further under the bus, so that the ball isn't any further rearward than necessary.

Regardless though, we never would have thought that this only moderate improvement in wheelbase/overhang ratio would have made such a huge difference. But the undercarriage components are huge as well (and put the van in the 9-10,000 lbs range itself), and I think the combo of all these elements just make this rig THAT much better. This rig simply feels "planted" on the road, yet drives like a car (albeit a bit wider/longer). That's the ultimate combo, in my opinion.

Damn, so all that 'right one two left, right one two left, right one two left' steering rhythm I developed driving the bus to Laurinburg is no longer applicable ;).

Mike and I were thinking we'd start by asking $3-4k for it... but that's negotiable :-)

Do you want to take it for a test drive before we put anything on the top?
