I spent several hours on google maps last night, searching for possible locations near the Triangle. There just--plain--are--NOT--many. Period.

Not facile with using Google Maps for cut and paste links, so I provided map coordinates. I rounded to the nearest 000 for easier input. (edited...thanks Chuck!)

Option #1
RBC center. smaller than Greenville, roughly 400ft square. You know where it is.

Option #2
Insurance Auto Auction Sidesco Rd Clayton NC. Irregular lot, about 600 x 500 ft
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35.59000,-78.40000&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=28.887524,56.513672&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16

Option #3
RDU airport Park and Ride #5. Big, long. Lightposts. May not guarantee presence of airport passenger cars

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35.89300,-78.77000&aq=&sll=35.590928,-78.40484&sspn=0.007224,0.013797&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16

Option #4:
National Guard runway at RDU.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=35.87000,-78.78000&aq=&sll=35.893678,-78.769815&sspn=0.007197,0.013797&g=35.89300,-78.77000&ie=UTF8&ll=35.870204,-78.779247&spn=0.007199,0.013797&t=h&z=16

I found a few other options but they were further out of town (Pope AFB, Mackall Aux airfield, Kinston Jetway's unused runway) but I figured this may help jumpstart people helping out looking for sites. Now....actually GETTING them for site rental is a different challenge, and one not for me. We need suave diplomatic types for that.

Just trying to move this from "identify the challenge" to "assess possible solutions." Thanks!

PS--I know it's easy to say reflexively "Your idea sucks, n00b!" (which it might) but prima facie dismissal of potential local options is not helpful. Let the officers accept/reject, hopefully after seeing in person and talking with people who own the lots.

I've hunted some in the past too, and I basically came to the conclusion that it is a LOT harder to find lots these days than in the distant past. One of the main issues is that somewhere in perhaps the 80's it became "required" to have a fancy parking lot with natural areas, plantings, etc, so almost all lots built in the past 20 years or so are broken up by all that junk. The second issue of course is Sunday availability which used to be close to 100% but is now maybe closer to 10%.

Hence I reset what I was looking for to think about places with large lots that have been around a long time. IBM in the RTP was started in the mid-60s, so it indeed has some large lots that are not broken up with all the pretty junk. Thinking along those lines, places that have been around a long time, might help in searching for usable lots.

The software group site where I work has too many islands. But main campus likely has lots that would work, but they are never completely empty on weekends.

google coordinates 35.918000,-78.86000

That's the original IBM RTP site.

...and the ground breaking for that s/w group site was in ~1984. :)

What you really need is an organized committee to tackle the issue head on. Make it number one priority. Maybe all that is play.

If you find some place or think of some place you know who to turn to and submit the idea. The group should have a lead that is one hell of a salesperson. In addition a well-throughout, through, fancy presentation. A number of years ago, Triad offered their presentation they make (scored the coliseum lot) for our use. Maybe the offer still stands.

The group could publish guidelines that would help you when you have an idea. For example, clear of residential areas and the possibility of a long term relationship. Contact information is vital

Got to be willing to lay out the dough...nothing is cheap or free any more. Plus, what benefit does the club offer the owner?

If I remember right, Mike Dishman contacted this place. Why we were turned down was never shared. Does the dude in Greenville know the owner, set things up. I am just spit balling...

What about the old SqD plant in Knightdale?

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hne ... 9&t=h&z=17

The Siemens plant in Wendell has moved most of its production to mexico. I may have a contact at this plant. Not the biggest lot but ...

Perhaps some of these we've looked at before.

We can always hope that the state is broke enough to think about letting people use:

No idea what this is but it's an awesome chunk of blacktop.

I wonder if there are any scripts that can image search google maps for big pieces of pavement?

Are you saying his second location is a police station?

Anyway, both of Milko's examples look pretty good.

Keep 'em coming! Do we need to split off to a possible new site thread?
