After the last RallyX my car developed a strong shake in the steering wheel at about 60-70 mph, and Performance Chassis says one of the wheels is now warped. The wheels in question are the stock 15" wheels that came on my 2001 Forester L.

1. Should I get a separate set of wheels/tires for RallyX?
2. What wheels are strong enough to handle RallyX? (For not much money.)

Thanks for any suggestions...

you should just get a spare set of alloy/alum 15" wheels from any subaru. like legacy or outback.. or other cars with 5X100. VWs and such.

then....

buy my extra set of Rally tires. :D

steel wheels arent the best for rallyX since they can get damaged really easily (as you have seen).

I picked up a set of outback wheels from a member on here. $100 with tires. sold the tires for $80. check out Craigslist.

If you're going to dream about something, how about dreaming about a place to practice. This only getting to drive for a few minutes a month is crazy!

Back when I actually had time to show up to RallyX's.....

I run 15" stock Forester steelies on my OBS, with Rally tires. I'd be REALLY surprised if these are any less strong than any AL wheel. They certainly are heavy, and not ideal for that reason, but I've also placed near the top of the pack using them on numerous occassions. I don't think mine have ever bent, but you'd likely not notice on a RallyX course.

If you have steelies now, I'd recommend making them your RallyX wheels, and get yourself a set of pretty take-off AL wheels (I got some off a WRX) for your street tires.

true, they do work. ive read on dirty impreza about how some can literally tear from the studs. but again, who knows.

i used a set of steelies with rally tires for some practice time, and i too can say nothing went wrong with them. I just upgraded to another set because the option was there.

the rims on our toyota. are off a vw . very strong steel wheels, also quite heavy.. but very strong. look around.. your sources need not be limited to brand.. only size and fit.

Yes, it makes sense to have two sets of wheels and tires, one for the street, and another with street tires for RallyCross. The only problem is this particular old Forester needs 205/65/15 because of the struts that are installed, which is looking at about $600 on tire rack. For some reason, my wife believes that an extra set of wheels and tires for my vehicle for Rallycross is crazy, as opposed to an extra set of wheels and tires for her car for Autocross, which is perfectly reasonable and sane.
