Okay, TSD Rally coming up in a couple of weeks. We have a qustion about unequipped. Can you wear a watch-or does that put you in equipped?

From the TSD info page...
Quote:
Classes
Non-Equipped: No equipment other than the car's odometer, trip-odometer, pencil/pen, and paper is allowed.

Equipped: Use of any additional equipment from that listed as "non-equipped" puts you into the Equipped Class. Such items might include a hand calculator, a rally computer, a GPS.

Since watches were not explicitly called out in the definition, I'll make a Vice presidential call ..
A watch or stopwatch would be allowed in unequipped. You just can't have electronics doing the math for you.

Stopwatches may not have been explicitly called out, but they clearly do fall under "additional equipment from that listed as "non-equipped"".

You would never make it in Stock class autocrossing, buddy! ;-)

Okay, so the question remains.....watch or no watch. I already read the info page and pretty much guessed that stopwatches were a no, no. Let's call a watch jewelry..?

(Hey, I finally am on the online!)

It was answered at this evening's meeting, but I'll state it here for the record: watches are allowed, in fact some type of timekeeping device is REQUIRED, otherwise you would not know when to GO. You are given a start time at the beginning of the rally, at each checkpoint, and at the end of the break, but there is no starter, so you will need to know precisely what time it is so you can start yourself at the correct time. A watch with a second hand, a stopwatch of some kind, or a digital clock that reads seconds would all be acceptable.

A more formal definition of equipped vs. non-equipped would specifically define equipped as computational equipment, non-stock mileage measurement equipment and electronic navigation equipment, but for this crew, Bowie's common sense definition of: if it's something you would ordinarily have with you in the car, it doesn't count as equipped, should suffice. If you have any questions about this or any other aspects of TSD rally, just ask!

Well, I normally have my GPS with me in the car, does it count as equipped? :D

I was just about to get excited about having a stopwatch built into the dash of my car.

So, just to clarify, a stopwatch will NOT put you into "equiped"?

According to those “in the know” at the meeting, if your everyday wristwatch has a stopwatch function, fine, wear it. However, you won’t have time to use it, so don’t worry about it. Bowie says pencil (bring several so you won’t be trying to look under the seat for it when you drop it) and paper and some kind of timing device is all you’ll need.

Could I substitute an ink pen for the pencil, or would that put me in "equipped" class?

What about chalk and a chalk board, or maybe an etch-a-sketch?

:D
