FYI, spotted on Craigslist:

96 Legacy Outback 5-speed w/ 190k miles, $3000 http://raleigh.craigslist.org/car/361678474.html

Sounds like a motivated seller. Decent price, would be a bargain for $2000 if it's been even somewhat maintained. Heavier than the Impreza Outback but has the bigger motor and more room for stuff in the back too :)

It only has the 2.2L. Or that is what is stated in the ad. So it has the same engine as a standard OBS or my Legacy but it weighs more.

Well crap, you're right. Gimme another beer :) WOW the Impreza is slow with the 2.2, can't imagine the heavier Legacy with the 2.2.

http://www.cars101.com/outback_archive9 ... %20outback

I feel somewhat vindicated in that the 1996 was the last year with the 2.2. 1997 Legacy Outback wagons had the 2.5. I had remembered that the 2.5 was standard in the Legacy, didn't know it happened that late.

Keep shopping :)

Spotted on Craigslist:

Great condition 1997 Subaru Outback Impreza - $5000

A little pricey but mileage is low. Someone go talk him down on price, we need a white one out there.

Hey Todd - Anders Green has a black OBS street car. He took *off* his roof rack. I asked him if he still has it, he said "yeah, it's probably in the back yard somewhere". I meant to tell you about that -- go call him :)

Now this is a bit better of a rallycross car than the OBS or the Legacy and not really a beater. :D

Even has a winning pedigree. I know but Kevin wasn't there to beat him.

Another decent-price OBS showed up on craigslist. I know a few people were considering one:

This could fit my needs! But I have heard of a lot of headgasket issues with the Legacys, does this carry over to these?

My OBS has 198k miles, still reaches rev limiter daily, get's pounded through every RallyX, and is my Wife's primary driver with carseat in the back for our 2 year old. Any questions?

Edit: to answer your question, I haven't heard of any issues with these, but I wasn't aware of the Legacy issues either.

It's a good probability that the 2.2 versions of the legacy were same or similar to the OBS, but at least in the first couple pages of posts, it appears everybody complaining about head gaskets had Outbacks or GT's, which all had the 2.5's. I'd say there's high probability the issue doesn't exist on the 2.2's - backed up by the half million or so miles put on a few OBS's currently in this club.
