I just wanted to put out a public attaboy for Simon and Kieran for finishing STPR this past weekend on their first try! This is one tough event, with a grueling 1-day schedule and some fast, tricky roads. Some folks have DNFed there 4 or 5 times before finally finishing, and finishing on the first try is actually a bit unusual.

My understanding was that finishing was the goal throughout the event, and their success brings them some valuable experience. From what I heard, Kieran did very well in the notes, there were no road penalties incurred either, and only a few "moments" out on the stages.

I didn't pick up a final copy of the results for the regional rallies (they did not enter the National event, but rather the 2 regionals that cover the same distance), and good luck finding the results from the 2 regionals at the Rally America site, but maybe they can fill us in on the details and share some stories from the event.

In related news, Matthew Johnson put in a strong run in his new PGT car to take the Production GT win by a 5 minute margin and also finish 6th overall. Great job! Also, local driver Bob Wall finished STPR on his first try as well, in his 2nd event with a new car, and the 2nd-ever event for his brand-new co-driver! Not only did they finish, but they finished in 10th place overall in the National event! Fantastic!

Congrats to all!

We did pick up some penalties for arriving late at one check in but everyone was complaining how tight that transit time was and I didn't want to be caught speeding. I heard one competitor say that were doing 75 mph in order to make their entry time. In retrospect we should have filed a complaint but I don't think it affected our overall position. (Which was mostly at the back of the field :-) ). The posted results only show the nationals and we only entered the regionals. However we did come home with a 3rd place trophy for the Sherwood Forest Rally and 4th place in the Finger Lakes Rally. Overall I think we were about 27 from a starting field of 51 cars.

Will post a more detailed report later but we met our goals: finish and have fun.

Edit: Regional results are Sherwood Forest Rally and Finger Lakes Rally.

Edit 2: Oh, the shame! In my detailed report I jokingly said that our stop in the river would be on YouTube in minutes! I wasn't so far from the truth

Simon

For those of you who weren't following the event closely, there were a few problems at the event the resulted in 2 stages (representing about 1/3 of the total mileage) being canceled. Here is an excellent writeup on the event that gives good detail on that fiasco.

It's unfortunate that the single arrest mentioned was an STPR course worker, and I actually know the fellow- nice guy, when he's sober. He got started in rallying right around the same time as me, but I guess we all choose different paths through life...
