Who's going and what do you plan to do while there?

The wife and I are going Thursday night and coming back Sunday - I'll be photographing everything I can get to and she'll be my assistant. :D We'll also work some special stage road closings if it's feasible to do that and shoot from where we're working (there are several places where that would work).

We found some great places to watch/ take pictures from, in case anybody's interested. You'd have to be a worker to be in those spots, though.

I will be there, codriving for Andrew Frick (green VW Scirocco). Emmie will be there working, most likely as a stage captain.

I'm there Friday evening thru Sunday morning. Course marshall I believe. What are those hot spots? PM me so I can get a jump on the best spots with Anders.

You'll be limited to spots on stages your crew is manning, so it won't be completely "a la carte". You'll probably do 3 stages, and most road closures either are at interesting locations or have an interesting location within easy walking distance. Note that leaving your assigned location is not a good idea unless you can park your car in such a way as to completely block access to the course, but that is fairly easily done in most cases.

Anders may not be in charge of what stage crew you'll be associated with, either, but it never hurts to ask...

I hope not -- Anders, are you "listening". :)

You can almost always get some good spectating in while working (personal opinion is that it's always better to be a worker than just a plain old spectator for multiple reasons). BUT, if you're a worker, *do remember* that your worker assignment needs to take priority over simply moving away from your assigned position to get a better spectator location. You don't want to be the person responsible for letting some spectator or local wander onto a hot stage!

I'm sure Anders could use all the worker help he can get, so I hope a bunch of THSCCers will show up to the only stage rally close to this area. Come on gang!

Only stage we didn't get to see much of on Saturday was Fire Drill. I can show you some good spots to call dibs on for the rest of them (you'll have to beg your stage captain Friday night, and nothing is assured). Working on something for any media photographers who show up - I can send it to anybody working the rally as a stage marshall. If you only plan to spectate, you'll just have to volunteer to get the good info. 8)

Just to pump people up (or give you something to complain about ;P ), here's the cover of the spectator guide. It gets printed at 8.5 x 5.5, so you're looking at it currently at nearly life-size (but 1/5th the resolution).

To those attending, don't forget that fireworks are legal in SC. When going to my parents' house for Christmas, there are several vendor just south of the line on US1. Not that anybody heading down there lives on a farm or anything.

I will be there crewing for Matt Smith and Matt Robinson in the Merkur. Should be a good experience.

Well, we've been back since about 1pm - been relaxing and monkeying with photos a little bit. It was the most fun yet for us - got to fly around dirt roads in an STi to get to the photo spots before the rally cars arrived, and got a lot of great photos of the action on the stages and at service. Met a bunch of really cool people with really interesting stories. Anybody who comes to our rallyxes and enjoys hanging out with all the cool people there in the relaxed atmosphere needs to go to Sandblast next year - it's pretty much the same thing on a much bigger scale.

Andrew Frick won his class with assistance from Carl Fisher's co-driving.

Kevin Hoff co-drove for Kent Davis, but they broke an axle right in front of my camera on SS6, so they DNFed. :( But they got it repaired at service and ran SS8 for fun. :D

Anders did a GREAT job!!! :cheer:

Kieran (my son ) and I were both course marshalls. We worked stages 1, 6, and 8. Had a lot of fun getting on and off stage for our work assignments - WRX being chased by a Focus !

It was pretty awsome sitting out in the wilderness, in perfect peace with mother nature, enjoying the silence ... then: bwaa! pop! bwaaa! pop! bwaaaa and the cars scream on by! Carl even had a chance to way at me as he and Andrew went by.

Yeah congrats Anders for running a great event. The level of organization and detail was a HUGE step up from previous events, I only experienced one hiccup with the confusion around the reseed at the beginning of stage 3. Not bad!

Really nice routebook and great detail in Rally Guide 2. Guess I should have read it closer before asking where the shakedown was...

For anyone who hasn't been to a rally, you should go next year. It's really unusual to have a rally only two hours away. Most of the competitors nationwide average about a 6+ hour drive to every event.

Kevin, no problem. I really think that people are so used to not having information available that they assume that if a quick skim doesn't turn it up, it must not be in there at all, so you better ask somebody. And I think that's a reasonable assumption, since I don't know of any other rally in the US in the past three years that has done something like this.

Even so, I think there are some sections of RG2 that could be more clear and I'm thinking of a couple things I could change/add to make it easier to use. And I'd love to have feedback if you have specific ideas on that.

Of course, yes, you do still have to read it.

Glad you had fun!

Cheers,
Anders
